"The husband who is not a believer is made holy through his believing wife. And the wife who is not a believer is made holy through her believing husband. If this were not true, your children would not be clean, but now your children are holy." (NCV)

What exactly does "being made holy" mean?

In Greek, the word is....hagiazo,

1) to render or acknowledge, or to be venerable or hallow




2) to separate from profane things and dedicate to God

a) consecrate things to God

b) dedicate people to God

3) to purify

a) to cleanse externally

b) to purify by expiation: free from the guilt of sin c) to purify internally by renewing of the soul


I would suggest meaning #2, particularly #2a, to align with other teaching in the Bible.

As Serapha's posted definition suggests, the person with a relationship with God has the powers of prayer and faith to cover his or her family - dedicate and consecrate it to the Lord. Prayers of faith are powerful, even to heal and forgive sins.

James 5:15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
