  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

The number of tabs I have open in my browser tends to fluctuate from like 3 to 15+ depending on what I'm doing. If I'm programming I generally just wind up with a ton of tabs as I search for documentation, code samples, or solutions to problems I encounter. I don't close them after I'm done so eventually I have to purge my browser of useless information. It's fun.

Whatever AV's faults and strengths are, how he chooses to spend his time on CF or any other forum is up to him. Take issue with embedded age, or the Ark being built in Jersey, or [current topic] can take a hike, or Pluto/Challenger/thalidomide if you must. But the fact that AV pads his post-count with counting threads has no bearing on his arguments, and drawing attention to it is little more than an ad hominem attack on a guy who, for whatever reason, enjoys counting threads.
Weeeell... he has used his high post count as backup of his authority at one time or another... so it has a certain relevance.

To be fair, even on these boards he does have a substantial posting history.

Also to be fair, however, half the time even those posts are either repeats or /threading out of topics leaving half the legitimate counterarguments unanswered.

Taking the mick out of the counting threads hobby, however, is not really on - as long as those don't get included in the cited post total that gets waved at newcomers.

As I have made clear before, the only time I 'wave my post count at newcomers' is when someone shows up out of the clear blue sky and says something on the order of, "AV never admits he's wrong."

When that happens, to be sure, I'll bring up my post-count.

I would never go to another site and tell someone -- anyone -- that they've never admitted that they were wrong.

In fact, I would wave my post count at anyone who did that -- newcomer or otherwise; and I would expect them to do the same to me as well.

Freodin saying I do that to 'back up my authority' is just plain wrong, and not worthy of response.

I do it to defend myself against false accusations.

Right, but that's not the only instance in which you wave your post count around.

And while I can appreciate the sentiment of telling people to go check through your post history, I'm pretty sure CF doesn't store over a million posts in the history.

What a shame.

Then I guess saying 'I never said [this]' or 'I never said [that]' is premature, isn't it?

So you inflate your post count to gargantuan levels through spam-counting just to make it really awkward for someone to note something you may have said in the past and so you can get a small mental one-up on a newbie.

Really?

What Coding Forums Do You Visit / Use ?

It depends on what I'm coding in. At work it's .NET and soon to be more specifically SharePoint. I don't hate .NET all that much, since I consider it one of the few good things Microsoft has managed to put out in recent years. I wish it were more platform agnostic though, especially since they submitted the core of the language to the ECMA. I'd also rather program in a different language, but meh a job is a job, and it's not a bad job.

Personal projects are mostly Java, XQuery, and Python (Jython specifically). So when I'm working on those it's sites for that. I'm usually on the freenode IRC channels for Java and other languages. The only coding forums I really participate in are the official Java forums. Other than that it's just whatever I find in searches.

As is waving your post-count around and asking people to check.
You're sentence stopped short, didn't it?

Check what?

Check the veracity of their claims when they accuse me of never saying [whatever]?

Even if someone came on here right now and said I never claimed to be a bachelor, I'd refer them to my post count.

Check anything.

The point is, they can't check.

Then why would someone accuse me of not saying I never admitted I was wrong about anything?

Whether they could or couldn't check, the sheer number of posts should appreciably reduce the chances of that person being correct.

As I say, there are other examples besides this where you quote post count, which I notice you're latching onto like a lamprey.

I'd dig them up, but...hey, like I said about the limitations of CF's recording of post history....

Whether they could or couldn't check, the sheer number of posts should appreciably reduce the chances of that person being correct.

Not necessarily - when your posts are either counting games (which is fine), or unabashed unapologetic posts (despite having the errors pointed out) their chances aren't quite that low.
