The 4th Commandment

In Exodus 20:8 it says (NIV): "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy."

But Jesus says here:

Matthew 12

1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.” 3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that one£ greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’£ you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” 9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” 11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” 13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.

I start a new job today at Wal-Mart and I have been scheduled on sundays when I normally go to church. I pondered alot of thoughts about working on sunday. Then my fiancee pointed out Matthew 12:11-12 to me and I feel that I am doing people good at this job so therefore I am obeying the Law. What do you all think?

If you want the job, you will have to abide by the requirements they put on you. If they have you working on sunday, you'll either have to work on sunday, or quit or be fired.

I did notice that this passage is about healing on the sabbath, not about working at a job on the sabbath. I think it's saying that it is okay to violate the sabbath for certain reasons, but not that it's okay to ignore you need for a day off every week. I think that you need to consider that if you can't take a day off on sunday, you need to pick another day during that week and chill out and get rested. It'll keep you healthy and going strong. Working 7 days a week is very bad for you. I got very sick that way (mono).

You presume SUNDAY is the sabbath day of the 4th commamndemnt. It isn't. The first day of the week is the day that follows the sabbath day.

Three days in succession:

Luke 23
54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

next verse

Luke 24
1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

You might want to look at Romans 10:4 (Christ is the end of the Law), Romans 14 and Colossians 2:16-17. The Law and all its elements are but a shadow of the things to come in Christ.

In other words you have freedom in Christ to observe any day as holy.

But even more important, as Jesus says in Matthew 11, "Come to me all you who labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." Rest comes not in a day off, but when we "Come to Jesus" (through the Word) and "abide in Jesus and in His Word" (John 15:1-6).

It is important to notice three points on this issue:
1. Sunday is the 1st day of the week, that is NOT the Sabbath. The Sabbat is clearly stated as the 7th day of the week beginning in Genesis Ch.2 and it does not change days anywhere throughout the Bible. Working on Sunday is fine. Working from Sundown Friday to Sundown Saturday is forbidden.
2. It says that it is "lawful to do good on the Sabbath" which shows that the Sabbath is still in force. But doing good does not mean working and collecting a pay check. CHRIST healed on the Sabbath, HE did not go collecting money or engage in hard labour. When they were picking the corn, that is ALL they did, pick up an ear of corn and eat it. This was not work, and therefore it did not violate the law of G_D. Those who complained about this, were those who were instituting their own laws in addition to G_D's. Working at Wal-Mart on the Sabbath is forbidden. Not only does it violate the law of G_D, it is a terrible thing for you to do for your own health. G_D did not make man to work himself to death. You have to take that day off to let your body and spirit rest, and be with G_D. After all, that is why HE says that the "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath" (Mark 2:27). This means that you must still keep the Sabbath, but that it is a gift from our G_D. After all, HE is the one who made us, don't you think HE should know what we need?
3. The last point, as someone mentioned earlier, you live in a country of freedom. NO ONE CAN FORCE YOU TO WORK ON THE SABBATH! You must choose to follow G_D all or nothing. And you are blessed to live in a country that protects your religious freedom. You simply REFUSE to work on the Sabbath. That's all there is to it. You tell your boss that you observe the 7th day Sabbath as commanded by G_D and from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday you WILL NOT WORK.
Blessings.

Would you say that this "freedom" permits me to:

worship other gods,
bow down to, worship, and serve idols,
take the LORD's name in vain,
dishonor my parents,
muder,
commit adultery,
steal,
bear false witness,
covet?

Your Neighbor:

Why such off the wall questions as these ?

All you have to do, is read the rest of the verse in Romans 10:4 - "for righteousness to everyone that believeth"

Love fulfills the Law, and no one would do any of those things you listed, if they Love God with all of their heart, soul, mind, and strength, and if they love Your neighbor as thyself !~ :)

YourNeighbor,

The freedom that Paul discusses is the freedom to live in the Spirit. Freedom for the Christian does not mean reverting back to the sinful bondage of pre-Christ living. To even ask about freedom, which allows sinful actions, means that you haven't understood what Paul meant by freedom from the demands of the Law.

Notice how Paul answers your concerns in Galatians 5:19-21 (deeds of the sinful flesh) and then the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. Life in the Spirit says, "I know that I am free from the Law. However, God, I desire to please you - not to earn your favor, because I already have it in Christ." So also Galatians 5:23-26.
