I'm thinking about making another attempt to read "Jesus and John Wayne" by Kristin Kobes Du Mez. When I first tried to read it, I wasn't sure how much of the things she wrote were true. I also had trouble understanding the false Christian things she was pointing out (like "plain understanding of the Bible"). And I thought it had hurt her case when she argued it from a political perspective instead of a Biblical or religious perspective.

On Anger (in Latin De Ira) written by Lucius Annaeus Seneca. It is a part of the literature that makes up Stoic philosophy.
A good quote from the essay is, “My anger is more likely to do me more harm than your wrong.”

Stoic Lessons: Musonius Rufus' Complete Works. Caius Musonius Rufus was known as 'The Roman Socrates'. He was a contemporary of Seneca. Taught the Stoic philosopher Epictetus (who may have taught Marcus Aurelius. He certainly influenced him).

It seems Lucius Annaeus Seneca was not a Christian. The 'holy spirit' might refer to something other than the third
person of the Holy Trinity. I might be wrong.

Seneca was not a Christian. He was a Stoic. He likely was born the same year as Jesus. He likely heard of Christians and likely witnessed Nero's persecutions of Christians in Rome. Seneca would run afoul of Nero. Nero would order Seneca to commit suicide (if he didn't commit suicide his family would suffer Nero's wrath).

I would NOT recommend Christians read Seneca or any of the Stoics (Musonius Rufus, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius).

The Stoics are not Christians, so I am not sure why a Christian would want to read them. Of course, anyone can anything they wish, regardless of if I recommend it or not. The Stoics have a concept of God they refer to as "Logos" (the fundamental, divine principle of reason, logic, and order that governs the universe). Aristotle had an idea of a Prime Mover (Unmoved Mover) and though he was not a Stoic the Prime Mover concept some have tried to say is similar to God. Again, not an idea that came from a Christian.

Perelandra by C.S. Lewis. I wanted to read it after reading Paradise Lost since in some ways Perelandra functions as an imaginative science-fiction retelling of John Milton's Paradise Lost. While Milton's epic tells the story of how Eden was lost, Lewis's novel explores a hypothetical scenario in which a new world's Adam and Eve successfully resist temptation, retaining their paradise.
