And I rarely see anyone do it more gracefully. He just expresses gratitude for his life and all it has been. He amazes me.

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

85, several forms of cancer, retired Spanish professor. Divorced and remarried.
He seems at such peace with it all. He asked me to officiate his memorial service and we are working on it. he has always been very involved in the community, travelled a lot, belongs to serval groups. Last 5 years have been really tough with spinal surgery aomong other treatment.

Then it's possible that if people remain saved and can't lose it, it would explain why this "atheist" had peace.

I am very concerned for both of you. First for the man espousing atheism and then for you as someone called to officiate upon his death yet not being moved to implore him to reconsider the Gospel. I feel it is imperative you speak truth to him and if he won’t listen then to gracefully bow out of the officiating. Or do SOMETHING out of love and respect for the poor wayward soul.

Good grief, man. He's 85. I'd suggest that he's been around long enough to have come to terms with his beliefs and to expect some appreciation of his final wishes and not have someone implore him to do anything at all. If he's been a good man and there is a mercifull God then he'll be accepted into whatever heaven there might be.
If you want to do something for him then pray for him. Else what? Tell him he's going to burn in hell unless he denies his own beliefs and accepts yours?

Well if this person is still alive and has never believed in Jesus for Eternal Life. Then he still can believe in Jesus for God's free gift of Eternal Life and in turn enter into death with Eternal Life living in him and like Jesus states.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
Unless he has judged himself unworthy of everlasting life, which very well may be the case and will die in unbelief and await his judgment at the great white throne.

No, no and no again. You can't decide to believe in something. You can decide to investigate it. And decide to discuss it. And decide to ask people that you trust to tell you about it. And then, if you think that the evidence is sufficiently compelling then you will automatically believe.
You can't take the evidence, have an internal debate and conclude that it is absolutely compelling and decide not to believe it. And you can't reject the evidence yet decide that you will believe it.
And something tells me that in the first instance, if the guy has been around for 8 decades then he'll have heard all the arguments for and against and he will have made his conclusion. And in the second instance, just saying that he'll believe to get the grand prize of Eternal Life! ain't going to convince the guy offering said prize that it's genuine (hint: because He's omniscient).
