  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You're just making me repeat myself. It's what I already said. I've heard all you're saying by several people in many threads over the last 10 years or more. And after all that repeated info, my conclusion is what I've already stated. I don't buy into most of it.

Yes, and people wonder about how you came to have that opinion. How was your reasoning? What data have you included?

Only about 3% of the Earth's surface is covered by cities and industry. I don't believe that 3% is affecting the rest of the 97% all that significantly. I think it's mostly the cycles of climate change the earth itself has generated over the last 4000 years.

Who, but you, propose that it is the amount of surface area covered by cities and industries that is the driver of global warming? Who and what is this argument directed at?

The people who have looked into the data and the mechanisms of climate have found different. Youre just some guy with a hunch. I know whos conclusions I should favor.
Not all of the people. Many see it otherwise.

Nope, you're making stuff up ha ha.

No, conclusions decide what the evidence says.
@essentialsaltes is just making stuff up? He has fabricated all the Global Warming related pages on the site of the MetOffice, NOAA, Wikipedia, ourworldindata.org, Nature.com and so many others?

Who says otherwise? What are their arguments? You realize that you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet. Especially not if it comes from journalists or politicians. ;)

Not all of the people. Many see it otherwise.
Many have various hunches that originate in a particular political commitment.

But far and away the vast majority of those whove studied the data and the mechanisms have arrived at consistent understanding of how this works. We are decades now from this being a new sort of science.

So, what is causing this steep spike in the average global surface temperature in the last 2-300 years?
View attachment 381410
And I'm asking specifically. If it's not human activity what geologic events are taking place to cause it? There is no spike that steep in the history of the planet. Most warming periods have taken thousands of years to rise a single degree and most have been under that. Here we see a rise of over a full degree in a little less than 300 years that just happens to coincide with when we started burning fossil fuels en masse.

Believing that is infallible is like believing AI is infallible.

New form of science is right. And it's been seen how all kinds of scientific conclusions have ended up being wrong over the course of time.

So you know, over 10% of the earth is also covered by agricultural land use. Which also of course has major impacts globally. It is true that agriculture is important and we all need food. But it would be surprising that someone would see that 10-15% of earths surface has been altered by people and yet we would somehow have no impact.

No known natural factors match up to our own. People for example, emit several orders of magnitude more CO2 into the atmosphere than all the worlds volcanoes combined, annually.

Yeah even though the earth has been full of animals for thousands of years, somehow the farts from livestock is having a detrimental effect on the climate.

You cant fight peoples decision to remain ignorant.
Indeed. But you can highlight their ignorance, so that they lose all credibility and influence.

?? That's what the data shows. I'm asking what you think is causing that spike. Specifically.

Are you just being incredulous about it for no reason?

People who have heard it all aren't ignorant. They just have different conclusions. Just as an atheist who's heard it all isn't ignorant, he just doesn't buy into it.

Then, please oh please, tell us what you have heard that we haven't. Then how did you come with different conclusions? Because your "cities cover only 3% of the surface" wont impress us. Well, it is impressive. It show an impressive ignorance.
As I wrote, your arguments are fact free, data free.

I'm saying the data could be wrong. Or misunderstood.

It isn't. All climate related data has been measured by multiple research centers, spread oer the globe, using a vast array of instruments. They should all be wrong in the same way. And within the same margin. And nobody has ever noticed it.
Have you been able to identify a source of error in the data the instruments or the interpretation thereof? ANd then I mean, like really identify, not just saying "I don't believe it".

Once again... I've heard everything you have to say from several people over a long course of years. As in you're not presenting anything I haven't already seen and gone over with others numerous times for over a decade. Also I don't do what others try to get me to do, no matter how much they try and complain about me not following their directions.

@Servus
That you don't buy it is indeed clear. Now, I would like to know why you think so.

What don't you buy?
That humans are digging up coal, pumping up oil, gas etc?
That oil and coal contain carbon?
That burning the carbon in the coal and oil produces CO2,
That CO2 mainly absorbs radiation around 15 µm wavelength?
That 15µm radiation heats up the atmosphere?
That we can measure temperatures?
that temperatures are rising globally?
