  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Two questions about Scriptural priorities

Like all Christians I take the Bible seriously. IITim 3:16. And I recognize among the teachings of the Scripture priorities are set. I Cor 13:13. Mt 23:23. So, though all Scripture should be taken seriously, it puzzles me that today some seem to prioritize the herbs and neglect justice like Jesus said. I would just like to ask how one explains that. I am listening. Here’s two examples of two types of reversed priorities.

1) First question. Mt 19:9 which is the main point. Yet the priority is on Mt 19:5 with regard to a completely different subject. Why?

2) Second question. Clearly Jesus didn’t cancel the law. Mt 5:17. “not to abolish”. But clearly to do something about it. “to fulfill them”

How? His death and resurrection obviously. But what else? So there are indications. Like Mt 7:12; 12:12; Mt 22:36-40; Lk 11:46. So, though the ten commandments are still valid; why do they get prominence over the ‘fulfillment’ treatment that Jesus gives them?

The Law will be fulfilled by The Jews (who all will be a believer in Jesus) during the 1000 year rule of The Messiah on earth. They will fulfill the law perfectly. As satan will be bound and will not be a presence on earth.

The Law is how The Messiah will rule the earth during the 1000 year millennium rule.

d taylor is a proponent of the 'Free Grace' Gospel. Which teaches that all you need to do to be saved is believe Jesus gives eternal life. No Cross, no repentance, no acknowledging Christ as Lord.

Ah, cool. Surely that's one way to see it. Amidst the colorful semiotics of Revelations. It allows a free for all of speculations. But, I like one of the last verses there "And let him who is thirsty come, let him who desires take the water of life without price." Anyway, thanks for your perspective.

I've mever met anyone who said that in church and I've met in several denominations, I have to wonder what different denominations actually teach in detail and if your perception is accurate,

The 'Free Grace Gospel' is held by many Dispensationalists. Also check out the Grace Evangelical Society site. Most Free Grace people belong to 'Bible Churches'.

Actually daily living by the commandments isn’t much different for gentiles under natural law ( Romans 2:11-16 etc.) & now. What the Lord told the rich young man in Matthew 19:16-30 ( note verses 16 through 19). The Lord was preaching the law being fulfilled and what He told the rich young man applied to Jews & Gentiles. What Paul says in Romans 13:1-14 ( note verses 8 through 10 ) is the law fulfilled.

Major lessons in the Gospels about our inability to actually keep the commandments does not render them useless. The rich young man was confused because he thought his job was done. There is the far worse example of the pride & arrogance of Pharisee in Luke 18:9-14. Procedurally, he was satisfactory but spiritually, a disaster.

Yet the Lord tells us to keep His commandments ( John 14:15-21) but notice the in dwelling of the Spirit here ( the Lord was speaking about the law fulfilled in John’s Gospel in looking ahead). The Lord promises a transformation for us by faith in Him in John 3:16-21.

Paul’s arguments against works are primarily based on people who insisted that Gentiles had to be physically circumcised ( Romans 4:1-25). Ultimately, Paul put it to rest by saying that physical circumcision is of no consequence either way ( 1 Corinthians 7:19). Notice Paul tells us we are to keep God’s commandments like the Lord told the rich young man & what Paul said in Romans 13.

We are saved by grace through faith & there is no room for boasting in works but we are to still live by faith doing good works ( Ephesians 2:8-10). Faith is a living thing that involves being faithful as an individual believer ( Colossians 1:2) or in ministry ( Colossians 1:7). Indeed, Colossians 1:1-29 is, I think, Paul’s great explanation of salvation and Christian life.

Ephesians 2:8-9 is the ultimate truth & if we really believe it then Ephesians 2:10 should be no big deal to understand. Living by faith in this world is difficult ( understatement) & we should always have the golden rule as our guide ( Matthew 7:1-12) & the Lord’s great commandments ( Matthew 22:36-40).

Thank you for this extensive, well written response. While it doesn’t address why today’s Christians often dismiss Mt 19:9, the main point, but prioritize Mt 19:5 for something unrelated, still the broader outline you give is excellent. Very impressive. And thanks. I especially am moved by Rom 2:26 “So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?” similar to Acts 11:17 “If then God gave the same gift to them as He gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who am I to hinder God?” It astonishes me many Christians can’t see that this principle applies to far more than circumcision.

I stusied Catholicism with a Catholic priest, was baptized in the Mormon cult, baptized again in an Arminian church. I have attended Methodist, Wesleyan, Mennonite, Antiochan Orthodox, and Baptist churches. My beliefs are staunchly in line with the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith.

I will not be persuaded against what I am sure of. I have prayed and studied a lot mostly from the Bible. I am in my seventies which has amounted to many years of intensive reading. I apologize if there are typos. I have an appointment for eye surgery..

I resonate with your spiritual journey. I was baptized as a baby Anglican. When I became a Christian, I attended a Congregational Church. I was re-baptized as a Baptist. Was with the Assembly of God for many years then returned to the Anglican Church, became a Franciscan Brother for 2 years. Returned to the Evangelical fold in a non-denominational Church. My theology is Wesleyan-Arminian, and I also am in my 70's.

"Free Grace" seems to mean different things depending where you live. Here in the UK, it refers to a church which holds to the doctrines of grace. For example Belvedere Free Grace Baptist Church in London has a statement of faith that is based on the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, which is Calvinistic. That church, and others like it certainly don't believe "No Cross, no repentance, no acknowledging Christ as Lord." Their website, if you are interested, is at: http://free-grace.org.uk

Yes David, I know that is the case. The American 'Free Grace ' movement started in Dallas Theological Seminary with the likes of Charles Ryrie, Zane Hodges and Bob Wilken. In the 90's there was a dispute between FG people and John MacArthur over so-called 'Lordship Salvation'.
Wayne Grudem wrote a great book answering the FG gospel called, 'Free Grace Theology. 5 ways it diminishes the Gospel.'

Thanks for that. It can be confusing when the same term is used to mean completely different things. Thanks again.

Well, I have two answers to the OP so far. I am grateful. Anyone else? First? Second? Or both?
(Not to criticize the branching discussions. They're fine. Just hoping readers would, kindly, also touch on the OP)
