  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Assuming what the guy was saying is being reported accurately I don't really blame the pastor for wanting to confront him, but his actions during the altercation and statements he made to his congregation immediately following put him in hot water IMO.

This isn't a self-defense case. Even though it looks like the guy threw the first punch, the pastor approached him aggressively and at one point during the altercation appears to be trying to break the guy's neck. And then he practically brags about it to his congregation even quoting scripture in weird attempt to justify it.

He lost control. He might get off with a sympathetic jury, but he should just face it head-on and let it play out.

Yikes! If that is true, I hope that young man gets the help he needs.
For some reason this brought back the memory of the Charlie Murphy/Rick James Chappelle show sketch. (I can't link it due to language)

Eddie: "Wow man, Rick really needs help"
Charlie: "Yo!, we just gave him some help!, bust his..... bet he won't come disrespect like that again"

The time: 1940s or 1950s. The place: a local church. It was summer, the windows were open, and a man who was called on to pray knelt at the end of the pew by the window. Whereupon a prankster outside threw a dirt clod that landed right in the man's mouth.

The man sputtered, said, "Excuse me, Lord, but I've gotta beat that so-and-so," leaped out the window. and took off after him.

When I first read the news I read the interview where the pastor was saying he was protecting his church and family. In which I am not against a man protecting his household. Now in diving in to the fine details there is much more to the story. So I am not as sure. We will have to see how the story pans out. Hopefully the pastor has all his bases covered and his story straight as he may be in for some lawsuits.

I can understand wanting to protect his family, if indeed, that is what he is doing.

But, he is same some really strange stuff that doesn't seem overly congruent with Jesus' gospel.

Kinda makes me wonder:
In a legal sense, what is the place to draw the line for a "religious belief or practice"?

It sounds like an ol' fashioned feud. Crossing the road to administer an "attitude adjustment" isn't protecting anything.

...as is often the case (much more to the story).

It seems there was a long history of conflict between the two parties. What steps did this pastor take to de-confict the relationship?

Spells claims he was protecting his family from a threat of future danger while he was traveling.

There's no such thing as self-defense from a threat of future danger. If that's what you're worried about, you call the police.

There's no such thing as self-defense causing you to cross four lanes of traffic to pummel someone for bad words. Frankly, in Florida, the other guy would have been on good grounds of self-defense to have shot Spells.
