  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Pastor Douglas Wilson Argues the Bible Supports Using Obscene, 4-Letter Term for a Woman in a ‘Prophetic’ Way

Pastor Douglas Wilson believes he is justified in using a vulgar word referring to female genitalia in certain cases based on his argument that the Bible itself uses vulgarity prophetically. Wilson has been unapologetic about his use of the c-word in a March 2019 blog post, and he explained his reasoning in a recent podcast with The Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles.

“I freely grant that Christians ought not to be cussing like sailors…our language is to be pure,” Wilson said in an April 4 conversation on “The Michael Knowles Show.” However, Wilson argued that “there are occasions when—prophetic language is what I call it—prophetic language is absolutely called for in a firefight.”

“There are times when it’s inappropriate to not be that way,” he said. “A lot of Christians feel like we have to be winsome and polite 24/7, non-stop, around the calendar, and it never occurs to us to realize that Jesus was one of the most impolite people ever.”

Wilson is of course right about Christ here, and of the necessity for occasional prophetic frankness when toothless winsomeness just won’t do. The Bible pulls no punches when denouncing sin.

From his posting, critiquing feminist theologian Nadia Bolz-Weber’s melting purity rings down to be recast as a vulva and presented to feminist Gloria Steinem:

“Let me tell you what this symbolism really means. This is what they are saying,” said Wilson, referring to Bolz-Weber and Steinem. “They are shamelessly declaring to the world that they are just a couple of c****.”

“You should be worried about the reality first, and descriptions of that reality second,” he said in the post. “That is not my position, nor my language. It is their position, their language, their degradation, their impurity, their sin, their shame, their logic, and their wormhole destination.”

The boundaries of vulgarity are broken. Too much raunchy entertainment has been sown and now we are reaping the harvest. I would consider talking or posting about someone else gossip. What is the purpose in sharing sins of the world by naming and calling out individuals that you never met personally, that are likely not Christians and that you have no authority over? Are we supposed to hate them? Are we supposed to try and take away their right to free speech? Will vilifying them do anything good? Lastly, is it really prophetic to call someone that?

Jesus is pure and holy. He might be direct but I cannot imagine Him using language like that nor referring to people in such a manner. I love the way that He addressed some women as 'daughter' even though, in His earthly life, He was hardly old enough to have adult children.

There is a precedent for vulgarity in Scripture, but it appears to be an exception rather than the rule.
And Jesus was not squeamish about dealing with "privates," as seen in Mark 5:25-34.

guys, I'm totally not a misogynist...
The irony is that the type of society where using foul language in reference to a woman is frowned upon and was apt to result in immediate corporal punishment at the hands of onlookers is the type of society that's also decried by feminists. Doing away with the negative limitations of that society also does away with the positive. If a man who refers to a woman by using a crude term is a misogynist, then a woman who refers to a man using by using a crude term is a misandrist.

The point is in the use of a crude term, period. While the Word of God does not mince words, and will use strong descriptives, offhand I don't recall it using cheap vulgarity.

It’s not ironic if that beating comes from a place of paternalism rather than a place of respect.

Please: not everything is neatly shoehorned into the narrative du jour. Trying to do so misses the point that the issue is the use of foul language. Even Peter would likely have disapproved, and he’s documented as using bad language on one occasion

Yet it also remains that the same society that had glass ceilings for women also wouldn’t tolerate disrespect. These days glass ceilings are rare, but so is abstaining from using certain language around and toward women. You can call it patriarchy; you can call it misogyny; you can call it wheelbarrow and roll on. Yet it’s still true.

No, when you made the comparison to cancelling quasi-lynching of yore, you made the discussion about more than just foul language.

No, what they wouldn't tolerate (assuming your recounting is even accurate, which I'll accept for the sake of argument) is certain forms of disrespect. Treating women as if they were less intelligent and less responsible is a form of disrespect, as is denying them various rights afforded to men and forcing them into marriages. Those good ol' boys were perfectly okay with all of that.

I'd posit that the men of the day didn't like the name calling because it was perceived as an insult on her father/husband/family rather than on the woman herself, who was considered barely a step (if at all) above property.

Neither Doug Wilson nor Nadia Bolz-Weber deserve the title "Pastor" They are both profiting off the name of Jesus Christ without showing evidence of belief in Jesus or the message of Jesus. When Doug Wilson looks in the mirror he sees an image of Nadio Bolz-Weber.

I once saw a man get up and unplug a juke box because of of what was considered off-color language in front of a woman. Since the woman was a stranger, no one was concerned about any male kin. But that doesn't fit the narrative, does it? Go ahead and try to shoehorn it into whatever is making the rounds these days. But since the only consideration appears to be the narrative, there's really no point for further discussion, is there?

It’s pretty rich that you’re the one accusing me of trying to shoehorn something into a narrative.
