  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Department of War recently dropped approximately 180 belief systems from its list of recognized religions for U.S. military personnel, including Wicca and other neo-pagan faiths.

A May 20 memo issued by the Undersecretary of War Elbridge A. Colby and signed by Anthony Tata, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, trimmed the list from 211 faiths to 31, according to Military.com.

The move intends to "streamline the DoW collection of religious preferences for service members to enhance the delivery of targeted religious support from the Chaplaincy," said the memo, which ordered the revision of the "religious affiliation codes" to go into effect within 60 days.

"The new list will provide chaplains with clear, readily available information that will better enable them to anticipate the religious support needs of service members and to provide religious support activities that align with service members’ personal faith and practices," the memo added.

Some of the belief systems that have been removed from the list include atheism, which was replaced by a general "no religion" or "agnostic" designation; pagan or Earth-based faiths such as Wicca, Druidism, Heathenism and members of The Troth; New Age beliefs such as Eckankar, Rosicrucianism, shamanism and spiritualism; as well as other alternative belief systems, including Deism, Unitarian Universalism and practitioners of "magick."

GOOD! To force a military chaplain to accommodate all of those pagan beliefs is insane. I still don't understand why the military doesn't just split beliefs... at least make 2 listings instead of 1 global place of worship/support.

In looking for the before and after list, found this:

Kind of surprised. Several Protestant faiths could be lumped together with little or no problem. Hazy memory has it that the Church of God sprang from the Baptists, and there doesn't seem to be much difference between Baptist and Presbyterian. Maybe lump Methodists with Episcopalians? That said, had a grandmother who taught at both a Baptist and Methodist church, and know a Baptist minister who became a Methodist minister.

I was surprised to see Unitarian Universalism on the list of deleted faiths. The Unitarians have a significant presence in my part of the country (northeastern US).
I agree- even though I’m very confused by their theology.

I can agree if it’s forcing Christian ministers do something against their conscience. That’s not right.

Allie Beth Stuckey Tells Sen. Mike Lee: ‘Mormonism Rejects the Triune God’

When Sen. Mike Lee asked why his church was initially left off the list of Christian faiths, numerous people responded with theological explanations. “That’s because Mormons aren’t Christian,” someone replied, adding:

You believe god was once a man who became god, and that you can become a god if you do good enough. You believe you are saved by grace after all the works you do. The Bible teaches the exact opposite. God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) have ALWAYS been and ALWAYS will be.

That person also shared a video about Mormonism from Jeremiah Films, creator of the 1982 documentary “The God Maker.”

Conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey also engaged in back-and-forth debate on X with Lee. To his request for an explanation of the slight, she posted, “Because, unlike every Christian denomination, Mormonism rejects the triune God.”

Theres denominations that reject the trinity. Like oneness Pentecostals. Personally, I dont believe in the trinity either. I believe the Father and the Holy Spirit are the same entity and not separate, so im a dualist. So the writer is wrong that all Christian denominations accept the trinity. But what I think the main issue is, isnt the rejection of the Trinity, its their view on Christ which is a whole lot of messed up.

The same can be said about Jehovah witnesses since they also reject the Holy Trinity.
