  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Minnesota Republican party’s decision to hold a moment of silence for Derek Chauvin, the former police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, has angered the state’s attorney general – who was the lead prosecutor in the case.

Keith Ellison, a Democrat, said Saturday’s gesture at the state Republicans’ annual convention in Duluth was “an act of profound cruelty” to Floyd’s family and “disrespectful” to Minnesota’s law enforcement personnel.

Yes, I had heard about this elsewhere.
I’m certainly glad that I still live in a nation that allows people to freely associate with like-minded people to do and say the most outlandish things.

That's diplomatically put!

There was no room for reasonable doubt about Chauvin's actions. All 9 minutes were on video, too sickening to watch.

And too evil to excuse, much less respect.

And yet we should forgive him and pray for him.

This thread had a clean up. Enough with the trolling. This applies to other threads as well. If you think "it never happened", ask for proof. IF you don't think the proof provided is actually proof, state that and why it is not proof. IF there is proof provided right off, don't claim it never happened.

Raise your level of debate. Something added to the of Statement of Purpose for a number of forums is this:

  • When you disagree with someone's position, you should post evidence and supporting statements for your position. This policy, sometimes referred to as "X means Y because of Z", must be followed especially when posting claims that are widely considered to be controversial.
Just making blanket statements and claims is just opinion, and everyone has one of those. An opinion and $2 will get you a cup of coffee (or $3) .

How often are other convicted murderers whose crimes were shown on TV hundreds of times honored with a moment of silence in a legislative body?

I believe in forgiveness because failure to forgive is like drinking poison hoping the person who harmed you will die.

You forgive to make yourself whole, to heal your memories. Forgiveness doesn't mean, in this case, that we cannot advocate an end to police violence.

What about praying for them? Because that's often what "a moment of silence" means.

To be fair, this was at the Party’s Annual (state) convention. Odd occurrences often happen at conventions and which is why they’re so fun to hold!

I, personally have zero problem with the Minnesota State Republican convention holding an unofficial, (as stated in the OP’s article) “moment of silence” for a man who is not going to see the sun for a very long time*. It’s sad that Officer Chauvin thought that needlessly causing the death of a fellow human being would not meet with consequences. That’s worth ten-seconds any day.

*metaphorically

Just like they did when the Minnesota Republicans party (officially) had ten-seconds of silence for would be Trump-assassin, Thomas Crooks?

We as Christians are obligated to pray for anyone and everyone is the only point i was directing at fellow Christians. Non-christians need not chime in on that. They can of course but anything that's not from a Christian perspective is probably going to be a non sequitur.

You see as Christians we're commanded to love, forgive, pray for and even die for bad people, just as Christ did.

Just because I don’t happen to share your religion doesn’t mean I cannot see rank hypocrisy when it raises its head.

That’s a wonderful way to live.

What hypocrisy is there in what I posted? Or are you going with the they're hypocrites because there wasn't also 10 seconds of silence for Thomas Matthew Crooks?

What a mixed up country. Now that the rose tinted glasses are gone it’s clear to se that the US is such a disaster.

I’ve never understood that. It’s totally possible to move on with one’s life without having to forgive.

That's indifference towards a person. Those holding a grudge against someone aren't indifferent towards that person.
