  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Evangelist and Samaritan's Purse CEO Franklin Graham issued a statementThursday morning dismissing the backlash to President Donald Trump's since-deleted social media post depicting him as a robed, Christ-like figure with light emanating from his hands.

"I do not believe President Trump would knowingly depict himself as Jesus Christ — that would certainly be inappropriate," Graham said. "I'm thankful the President has made it very clear that this was not at all what he thought the AI-generated image was representing — he thought it was a doctor helping someone, and when he learned of the concerns, he immediately removed the post."

I had received some questions about President @realDonaldTrump's recent posts, and here are my thoughts:

I do not believe President Trump would knowingly depict himself as Jesus Christ—that would certainly be inappropriate. I’m thankful the President has made it very clear that…
— Franklin Graham (@Franklin_Graham) April 16, 2026
After deleting the Truth Social postMonday following pushback from many of his supporters and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., Trump dismissed allegations that he was attempting to liken himself to Christ. He instead said he thought the AI-generated image of him in first-century Middle Eastern garb depicted him as "a doctor" who was healing people.

Or did he mean to say that the photo was doctored?

Not trying to appear as Jesus Christ isn't the same as not trying to appear as deity. This is like the dust-up a few years ago where some of the perks the NRA came to light and the NRA stated that they did nothing wrong. And if, as it seems, the NRA paid perks that it had agreed to pay, then, no, it didn't do anything wrong. It still wasn't what many members wanted their money to go toward.

I don't think Trump tried to make himself into Christ, either. Portraying Trump as deity is another thing, is very likely, and denying one does not deny the other, and neither should be approved of by Christians.

He didn't come up with the idea or create the thing. Nick Adams designed and created it. Trump just liked it and shared it. Of all the things for people to spend their energy on over things Trump does, a meme probably shouldn't be so high on the list.

That's right: He liked it. I'm sure the astronauts aboard the Artemis II liked the comment one made about showing what mankind can do, but I found it cringeworthy due to the shear hubris. That image was cringeworthy for the deity aspect, and Trump liked it. That's actually not surprising, and that's said without insult.

How do you know with absolute certainty exactly what he was thinking at the time?

It is good that saner voices prevailed regarding this unfortunate and indeed blasphemous post.

He saw it; he liked it; he ran it. This is not hard.
That doesn't establish how he perceived it.

Even Franklin Graham didn't perceive it the way everyone has been told to perceive it.

You are correct—personal attacks are against the forum rules, and even if such rules didn’t exist, it’s still completely inappropriate to engage in personal attacks in a public space. However, I believe this forum seems outdated and reflects an era when personal attacks, provocative language, or targeting someone's appearance, gender, or beliefs were seen as unacceptable behavior in American society.

Today, we live in an American culture where even national leaders use derogatory names on public platforms—calling women “Miss Piggy” on national television, referring to senators as “Little Marco” or “Crooked Hillary,” openly criticizing religious figures like the Pope, boasting about inappropriate behavior towards women, and sharing AI-generated images of themselves as Jesus. Some even post on social media advocating ending five-thousands of years of civilization. I think we've moved past the time when personal attacks were unacceptable online, our political discourse at the highest levels has become so coarse that perhaps the terms of service should be updated to reflect modern realities.

This forum seeks to maintain the civility and charitable behavior reminiscent of a bygone era when civility was considered a virtue and blasphemy was regarded as a sin. Today, evangelicals embrace leaders who claim, "I never ask God's forgiveness because I haven't done anything wrong," and Catholic Americans believe the political figures they support have a better understanding of the Bible than the Pope himself. Therefore, these Terms of Service for the forum are absolutely useless and completely inadequate for the times we live in.
I think that when we have the POTUS, possibly the most famous and powerful person in the world lowering the bar with daily personal attacks against virtually everyone, personal attacks by others are to be expected. Trump and his followers have made it socially acceptable IMO.

The problem with it is it derails the thread with Off Topic banter.

For me, it’s not the politician’s behavior that shocks me; what shakes me is the voters, especially the so-called Christians, who justify the actions of a person pretending to be Jesus and behaving in a way that we would not tolerate from a four-year-old misbehaving in public. For me, so-called Christians think it is okay to attack a pope because he wants to promote peace. To me, Christians think a politician’s personal problems and attacks in the political arena can be compared to Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross. And then we want to maintain a term of service that says no personal attacks in an online forum, we can’t call people out for not being Christian because they are okay with behavior like grabbing women’s private parts. Give me a break.

Maybe you should ask the moderator to enforce the TOS. After all, we are a nation of rules and laws and should behave like good Christians!
or I could generate a picture with AI , pretend to be Jesus and post here.

Like this? I'm wearing a white and red robe with glowing hands, so I must be pretending to be Jesus.

Because others do it that justifies it and makes it acceptable? I’m reminded of what my mother used to say “ If everyone was jumping off a bridge would you do it too?”
