  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

They probably gave to the poor. Paul told Timothy not to desire wealth but to be content with food and clothing. Why is that? Why did Jesus say not to store wealth on earth but in heaven?
Exactly, they did not tenaciously hold on greedily to their riches.

Why did Paul tell Timothy not to desire wealth but to be content with food and clothing?
Because Timothy wasn't particularly rich in this world's goods. We notice that Paul didn't say the same thing to Lydia. The bible doesn't condemn having money; it says that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

If Jesus said not to store wealth on earth, isn't that saying not to be rich? And why is desiring wealth wrong if its ok to be rich?

Not it is not the same at all, otherwise people like Abraham, Solomon, Job, Lydia and Joseph of Arimathea would all have been disobeying God. Just to take one example, when God called Abraham to leave his home in Ur of the Chaldees, He didn't command him to leave all his wealth behind.

We cant use rich people in the old testament as examples to follow. We have wealth like them but only in heaven. Those rich men in the old testament had multiple wives. I dont think that's an example to follow. I follow Jesus and his apostles. They were not rich and they preached against wealth.

Lydia and Joseph of Arimathea are New Testament characters.

For all we know they gave their money away. I think we should follow Jesus and Paul here. They teach against having or wanting wealth

They may have done, but as you say, it is only "for all we know," as nothing is stated in Scripture, either of them being commanded to do so, of of them doing so.
