Trump says he’s sending hospital ship to Greenland

“We are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there,” Trump said in a social media post.

Trump announced the plan to send a hospital ship just before hosting a dinner for Republican governors at the White House, where he sat next to Landry.

It was unclear what prompted Trump to make the announcement. The White House and the Pentagon haven’t commented on the president’s post. The Danish government and the administration in Greenland also haven’t commented.

I have a comment, though.

If you're of a paranoid bent, one might ask: Why is the US pre-positioning a 65,000 tonne hospital ship off the shore of a foreign nation - are they expecting a lot of casualties all of a sudden?

Of course, both major US hospital ships are actually in dry-dock at three moment, with the first not likely to emerge until July. USNS Mercy, the ship referenced in the "Truth" posted, is also part of the Pacific fleet.

Donald Trump (or his staff) can't even get basic facts right. No wonder he's so popular with the YECs and flat earthers. "He Gets Us".

The Trump Administration could deploy these ships, once refits are completed, to areas they are actually needed. The Black Sea would be a favourite, right outside Odessa. As would the Western Mediterranean or the Caribbean Sea.

Nothing has to make sense. The USNS Comfort is actually based in Norfolk Virginia, but a San Diego ship in a shipyard is the one to go.

Sounds like they have more than enough capacity to care for that US submariner (hardly "many people"). And even if they don't, he should be flown to a US hospital instead of a US hospital ship being directed to the island he is on. Especially one that is apparently currently being refurbished.

Something not mentioned is that Denmark doesn't exactly have a sterling record when it comes to the Inuit. Whatever the situation may be now, that perception may still be there among the Inuit. And if there's going to be a rapid build-up of facilities within the agreed upon boundaries of US installations, it would be good to have something handy until base facilities can handle the increase. And yes, if there is anticipated to be some sort of conflict in the region, one that countries like Denmark may want to sit out, it would be good not to have to rely on their facilities.

In either event, there's no reason to accept the stated reason at face value. Positioning a hospital ship with the rhetoric that it's to help Greenlanders sound a lot better than the other possible reasons. Even "Trump's nuts" works better than "Get ready for war." And if the stated reason sits well with the Inuit, it makes a nice, political, wedge, particularly if long-range plans include annexation of Greenland.

I think it's a great idea to send a hospital ship that is currently in a shipyard being refurbished to treat a sick US submarineer or to provide free Healthcare to the indigenous people of Greenland while US citizens struggle with getting adequate Healthcare and we are potentially planning a no war with Iran. President Trump has our best interest in mind.

If they accept the ship, then Trump can point out that the health service is inadequate in Greenland (it isn't). If they refuse, then he can lash out to those cruel Danes who block healthcare for Greenlanders, even when it is offered for free. Either way, Trump wins.

They've already said 'No thanks'. Couched in suitable diplomatic language should they make it official. But why give such an idiotic proposal any credence?
