  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I have been reading parts of Philip B. Payne's book "The Bible vs. Biblical Womanhood".

It has been helping me with writing my current article. And it also made me realize why I wanted to quit reading the Amplified translation of the Bible to begin with. I've gone back to the NIV again.

I am re-reading The Kalevala compiled by Elias Lonnrot in 1835. It is a collection of tales in epic poem form of the mythology of ancient Finland. It was a key source for Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Silmarillion. Tolkien used the Finnish language to create his fictional Elvish language of Quenya. The Kullervo Cycle (Canto's or Runes 31 thru 36) tell the tragedy of Kullervo. Tolkien relied heavily on it for his story The Children of Hurin and specifically the character of Turin Turambar.

I have begun His Master's Voice by Stanislaw Lem. It is about a message received from another civilization. Scientists struggle to understand its meaning. Ultimately, they cannot understand the message as the beings who sent it are so utterly non-Human it is impossible. The beings who sent the message are far too alien.

Is it any good?

It is. The Volsung Saga is a fascinating story on its own. Tolkien does an excellent job putting it into epic poem form. The story has adventure, treasure, betrayal, romance, battles, etc. Everything an adventure story needs. It features some historical figures such as Atilla of the Huns.

Here is the opening:

"Of old was an age
when was emptiness,
there was sand nor sea
nor surging waves;
unwrought was Earth,
unroofed was Heaven --
an abyss yawning,
and no blade of grass."

The Secret History of the Mongols. The author is unknown. It was written in the early 13th century (most likely) and tells the story of the rise of Temujin (Chinggiz Khan) and partially the reign of Ogedei Khan (successor of Chinggiz Khan). It is oldest surviving work of the Mongol script.

The translator is incredible and amazing, he did what very few would do.
He studied Mongolian, Tibetan, and Chinese at Harvard University.
Then lived for 2 years in Inner Mongolia, taking classes in the Mongolian language and literature department at Inner Mongolia Normal University. And he completed a PhD in Central Eurasian Studies.

He didn't learn the old Mongolian script in Mongolia, but in Inner Mongolia, which is part of PRC.
Because the old Mongolian script is no longer used in Mongolia, but still used in Inner Mongolia.
If any uni is looking for an old Mongol expert, perhaps nobody would compete with him if he applies.

With Lent starting this upcoming Wednesday (February 18th), I am planning on beginning Saint John of the Cross: Master of Contemplation by Donald Haggerty and Saint John's poem Dark Night of the Soul.
