  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

More than two-thirds of Americans and most Republicans believe that President Donald Trump’s post about the death of Rob Reiner was “inappropriate,” according to a recent survey.

YouGov posted last Friday about the results of a poll they conducted of 1,107 American adults, in which 72% said that they believe Trump’s post about Reiner was “inappropriate,” while 17% said they believed it was “appropriate.”

Whether the polls are accurate or not, and I'm inclined to say yes, Trump does say trashy stuff.
But we have been training to expect and accept it if not defend it.

Ahem:

Trolling stuff. That's more specific. To the partisan, anything Trump says is either trashy or gold regardless of what's said, all dependent on the listener's political leanings.

Getting back to the original post, we have the Christian Post reporting on a poll. The problems with polling can be broken down into sampling and weighting. The classic example most are willing to talk about is Dewey and Truman. The polls that put Dewey ahead had flawed sampling that skewed results toward Dewey. Modern day pollsters have the same problem. A significant one are those willing to spend their time dealing with a poll. Decades ago now, CNN showed up at an area poling place with a post-election poll. To a one, recipients balled it up and tossed it into the bed of a nearby pickup. With scammers today, people are also leery of numbers they don't recognize. Some pollsters display their name when they call, which means it then comes down to whether the person wants to be bothered with them. That all means that polling is a sampling of those willing to waste their time talking to a pollster.

At this point should mention fake polls that are really fund raisers and ask straw-man questions that they think those of a specific political leaning will support, then ask them for a donation. That's really a separate topic, but something to be aware of.

Legitimate pollsters realize they have sampling issues. To try to correct this, they use weighting. The problem here is that weighting is based on assumptions about the sample willing to answer their questions. Weighting is only as good as their understanding of the sampling, and all it takes is one erroneous assumption to skew the results.

The end result is I'm highly skeptical of polls. I sometimes wonder if they're more accurate than posing questions to a Magic 8-Ball. (tm).

The next issue is Christian Post, and comes down to something very basic: Why should I believe that their articles are unbiased? In this day and age, I figure all media has an agenda, intentional or not. So far, I'm seldom surprised.

You don’t need a poll to recognize that the tweet was inappropriate. It appears that instead of simply acknowledging this, you spend two or three posts criticizing the poll and the magazine.

do you believe the tweet was inappropriate or not?

Interesting. A discussion about a the story that appeared in a reputed Christian publication about a poll about Trump's comments on Reiner have now become a discussion of the tweet itself.

You keep avoiding the question explains why you believe the poll is inaccurate. You don't personally find President Trump's tweet inappropriate, so you question why other Christians would consider it objectionable.

The fact remains that the tweet is inappropriate, and one don't have to be Christian to see that—any decent human being should recognize it. However, we now live in a political climate where decency has faded, replaced by tribalism. People feel compelled to defend their side against any criticism, disregarding decency and humanity.

This poll gives me hope—many Christians seem to value decency over politics. Those who abandon decency for tribalism are not living up to the true meaning of being Christian.

The key thing is the poll. What you or I think about Trump's comment is irrelevant to the accuracy of polling and media bias. I posted why I'm skeptical. I don't particularly care if anyone accepts that or not.
