  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The cup of Christ, of what do you believe it was made?

Was it of wood, pottery, glass(?), a base metal such as bronze, a noble metal such as silver or gold?

Is this a theological question, yes and no, first and most obviously it is about material things in an historical setting but secondarily it is also about the meaning of the actions and objects that are mentioned in holy scriptures about the last supper of the Lord Jesus Christ and there is always a theological and spiritual meaning in the actions and objects that are included in the inspired text. I leave it to those who choose to reply to offer their insight into the theology of the cup or not to offer any theological component in their reply.

Who knows! Best guess would be stone. Stone vessels were highly favored by Jews during the Second Temple period because they were considered unsusceptible to ritual impurity.

My main contribution will be scriptural : let's focus on its inside rather than its outside (see controverse with pharisees).
To answer your question, yet and then, i'd say it could have been made in any material indifferently as regards its role in christianism

This study proposes a tantalizing theory behind the cup presently stored at the Cathedral of Valencia in Spain. The study is open source.

Abstract

The Cathedral of Valencia has kept an important relic since 1437: the Holy Chalice of the Last Supper. It consists of an agate cup, a gold stem, and a gemstone foot. According to a pious tradition, this cup is the one used by Jesus of Nazareth to institute the Eucharist. Tourists visiting Valencia Cathedral often doubt its authenticity. There are certain queries that pilgrims wonder about, some of which have not been studied in depth. For example: What is known about the family who owned the chalice? Why would Jesus use a gemstone cup instead of one made of glass, silver, or gold? Aimed at clarifying these concerns, the research methodology was essentially centered on a review of the literature. The main conclusions are the following: (i) The Cenacle belonged to a rich disciple of Jesus, who would have lent him a valuable cup of blessing. Quite likely, it was the family of Saint Mark, who had a close link with Saint Peter. (ii) It is unlikely that Jesus used a cup made of glass because this material was relatively affordable. By contrast, gemstone vessels were highly appreciated. This case study highlights the importance of promoting historic and scientific studies about Christian artworks as a pre-requisite to foster heritage tourism.”

Disclaimer: I am not making an argument for or against this study or for or against this relic being the cup of Christ. I just found the study interesting.

Jesus Christ of Nazareth, known for His humbleness, would not have such an elaborate vessel.

But what if, as the study suggests, the cup was merely given for Him to use by the relatively well off family of Mark or Peter?

Jesus Christ of Nazareth attended many, many Passover meals. To his apostles and disciples, this was just another meal to be shared. There was no understanding or clarity on the fact that this was actually the last meal and that the meal represented the future eucharist. In other words , no specialized cups or utensils beyond standard household items were mandated for the ancient Israelite Passover meal and there is no reason to assume that this particular meal was different from the rest.

I read that: The Upper Room, where Jesus celebrated the Last Supper and the Holy Spirit descended at Pentecost, was traditionally located in the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark (Mark the Evangelist), a wealthy Christian woman in Jerusalem.

If that's the case then an ornate cup belonging to a wealthy person is certainly quite possible.

1. This was no ordinary Passover and Jesus told them.

“When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭22‬:‭14‬-‭16‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

2. Since Jesus did not bring His cup with Him then He used a cup that was given to Him.

3. Traditionally it is believed that the last supper was held at the house of Mary, the mother of Mark. They were affluent so it follows that they used higher end cups for regular use so no specialized cup or utensils would have been necessary.

4. Jesus send word ahead of their arrival so that the owner of the house knew that they wanted to use the upper room for the supper (Luke 22:10-12). The owner would have been honored and prepared the room for them probably with the best they had.

Again, I am not arguing either way but you do need to follow the story. The evidence so far seem to point to Jesus merely using the cup that was given to Him to use by the wealthy owners of the house. This does not in any way take away from Jesus humbleness.
