  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What would have happened to Adam and Eve and Cain after death?

Genesis just talks about Adam and Eve facing death as a punishment for their sin. I was wondering what would have happened after that? Would they be resurrected and judged by Jesus? If they are saved I wonder what about Cain? Thanks.

Like for everyone else, repentance is key.

There's this idea that before Jesus, everyone - saved or unsaved- went to Hades, basically you'd just rot forever, 'saved or not'. After Jesus' death & resurrection, those who were righteous, their spirits went to heaven.
I do not know what to think about that.
The emphasis is usually a lot in the Old Testament are saved. We do know that. Hebrews describes a great cloud of witnesses who are examples of the faith, including OT prophets. Abel is mentioned, not Cain. Adam is not mentioned, but few Christians will doubt Adam wasn't saved. Moses & Elijah also appear at the Transfiguration.
(I wonder if their appearance at the Transfiguration dismisses the Hades idea???)

The Bible said, three days the gospel was proclaimed to people before Noah. So it means people from Adam till Noah are somehow subject to the New Covenant (the same covenant today's humans can have). We don't actually know the details of the part of the Covenant applicable to ancient humans before Noah. However, the Final Judgment of all mankind is a covenant-based but subjective judgment from a God who is absolutely fair and just. Jesus will provide a fair judgment under all circumstances, by evaluating all affecting factors including the judgment of minds and hearts.

As for the case of Cain, only Jesus knows how to judge, and to judge correctly.

Just for clarity, because I'm not sure how all the negatives in this phrase cancel out: Are you saying that most Christians think Adam was saved, or most Christians think Adam was not saved?

Every one in the OT was saved by the grace of God through faith just like in the NT. Example is Abraham. So if all three had faith then they are saved. God will know that not us.

Hi
When we die we go to sleep and remain asleep until the resurrection of the dead. When we sleep we are conscious of nothing until Christ wakes us up.

Love and Peace

They went to Sheol and now have been taken to heaven when Jesus was resurrected. They were taken by Jesus because they believed in Jesus for God's free gift of Eternal Life. Which is what they had to do, after they sinned because they lost their sinless status at the eating of the fruit.

Actually Davetaff has it right. All sleep through the first death. Davetaff should have given biblical support for his statement, which I wil provide.

Our State In Death

The state of death is misunderstood by most people. What I am about to share will be new to you, thus you will naturally reject it because it is different. However, truth is not based on what any faith organization may teach or the number of individuals who believe as you, but rather Gods word. In Genesis 2:7, we learn that man was formed from two elements, dust of the earth, and the breath of life from Jesus our creator, and man became a living soul/ person/being. Death is the the separation of these two elements. The body decays and returns to dust, and the breath of life/spirit returns to our God (see Ecclesiastes 12:7; James 2:26 and Job 27:3) Do souls die? Yes. (see Ezekiel 18:20, and Rev. 16:3) Do people go to heaven or hell at death? No. (see John 5:28,29; Acts 2:29,34; Job 17:13) How much does one comprehend at death? Nothing. (see Ecclesiastes 9:5,6,10; Psalms 115:17) Can the dead communicate wth the living? No. (see Job 14:12,21; Ecclesiastes 9:6)

Jesus called the first death "sleep" (see John 11: 11-14) Therefore based on these few texts we all sleep in the first death, with no knowledge of what is going on. Latter we will be raised either in the first resurrection of the saints or the second resurrection of the lost, and receive our eternal rewards. A proper understanding of death magnifies the love of God.

Paul disagrees.

“but we are of good courage and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬ ‭NASB2020‬‬
Is it wise to build ones faith on just one texts, while ignoring many others? Paul is the hardest of all bible writers to understand. So please consider the following.

So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:6-7 NKJV

Does this verse put us into defense mode? Do we feel pressured to explain what it is not saying? We should never study God’s word in defense mode. Acts 17:11 commends people for searching the Scriptures with open minds, not defensive minds. So instead of getting defensive let’s look at what Paul is saying. We find the expression Paul uses being absent from the body and present with Christ similar to the same type expression he makes in Colossians.

For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, Colossians 2:5 NKJV
Paul is simply using a figure of speech as when he says absent from the body is to be present with Christ.

As one reads all of 2 Corinthians, it seem to pick up on a theme, and it is not the state of the dead. The theme seems to be living in the Spirit as opposed to living in the flesh or the body. In 2 Corinthians 5 that theme is very apparent. For example,

For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again. Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:14-17 NKJV

Paul’s reference to being absent from the body and to be present with Christ is ongoing as we live on this earth. We see it here in Ephesians too.

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Ephesians 2:4-6 NKJV

To be present with Christ, and to sit together with Him in heavenly places would be the same, and is a currently ongoing process. In all of Paul’s writings he talks about living in the Spirit as opposed to living in the flesh. I see 2 Corinthians 5 as a continuation of his theme. Paul is describing the life in the flesh or body which separates us from Christ, as opposed to living by faith and being present with Christ right here on earth. He goes on in verse 17 and describes a new creation right here on earth.

This leads us back to the point of Phil’s song, I want to be so close to Jesus now that it is no big change when He comes. 2 Corinthians 5 is teaching us to crucify the flesh, and live with Christ here on earth. Paul strongly hits this point again in Titus.

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. Titus 2:11-14 NKJV

In 2 Corinthians 5:17 and again in Titus 2:11-14 grace changes us right here on earth in the present age. And it is because of this that we look forward to Jesus’ glorious appearing.

Jesus disagrees with you. Hopefully you don’t find Jesus hard to understand.

Biblical truth can only be understood when we approach a study on any topic with humility and a opened mind to understand what they teach. Spiritual pride keeps one in darkness.

It wasn’t until 1205, that the Bible was divided into chapters and three centuries latter 1551 into verse, divide by sentences and punctuation added. The Geneva Bible was the first English Bible, with these changes and appeared in 1560. And while our modern Bibles provides us some distinct advantages, this does carry with it certain danger. There are places where those adding chapter, verse and sentence delineation, end a chapter or verse in an awkward position, which can cause us to separate in our minds things which the biblical authors intended to be read together.

In the texts that you quoted above, the comma placed before the word, "today" leaves no doubt that the thief and Jesus would enter Paradise that day. But did the thief die that day at sundown, the end of a day in the Jewish mind and according to God's reconning of a day? (Sundown to Sundown = a day) Did Jesus go to heaven/paradise that day? It is obvious that thoes who added the punctuation which we find in our bibles today viewed death as you do. This teaching goes back centuries. Satan was the first to promote the teaching that one does not actual die apon death. However, when we consider what John had to say in chapter 20:17, Jesus told Mary, He had not yet [on Sunday morning] ascended to His Father in heaven.

Should you choose accept the comma where it is today in our bibles, then you have an internal conflict with Jh. 20:17, and all of the texts I listed in my first post to you. We discover truth when we can resolve these internal conflicts. In order to do that we should understand that the comma in Luke 23:42,43 should have been placed after the word today. When we do that the text has a very different meaning and the conflict with John 20:17 and the others texts I gave disappears, and truth is revealed to those who are willing to accept it.

There was no punctuation in Koine Greek. All the words ran together. Like this:

Luk 23:43 - καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἀμήνσοι λέγω σήμερον μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐντῷ παραδείσῳ

The comma is of no consequence to the context or message of the verse. I posted the verse from the NASB 2020 which has current scholarship. No other hermeneutical evidence has been found to question the position of the comma.

The verse is specific that the thief would be with Jesus today in paradise so if Jesus said it then he died that day before sundown. Mark writes that it took 6 hours for Him to die so that would put Jesus time of death around 3 pm. There is no precise time of death for the thief but it does not need to be.

Moving the comma after the word today does not make any sense in the context of the verse or the message that Jesus was conveying.

Cain was a prototype Antichrist who was marked for religiously murdering his own brother. Things aren't looking too good for him.

We don't know if Adam and Eve repented. They were given a prophecy that a savior would come and passed on their history to others... We had Flood history and the Fall of Man (Older Brother being tricked by the spider into leaving Old Man the Creator) even in Native tribes a hundred years ago. They must've drilled it into their children's heads because we had this stuff after thousands of years with no western contact (even though it got garbled.)
