  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Former President Barack Obama is accusing some liberals of embracing what he refers to as a "holier-than-thou superiority" that he likened to the conservative Christian Moral Majority movement, which he described as "dangerous."

Obama appeared on the "[bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]" podcast with comedian Marc Maron on Monday. The two discussed political polarization in the United States and the importance of engaging in discussions with people with opposing views.

“There's been a lot of post-mortem about Democrats and progressives," Obama said, telling Maron that he saw his stand-up routine where he suggested that Democrats "figured out how to be so annoying." Maron recalled how he had previously suggested that Democrats "annoyed the average American into fascism."

Obama insisted that he has repeatedly told Democrats and progressives, "You can't just be a scold all the time."

"You can't constantly lecture people without acknowledging that you've got some blind spots too and that life's messy," he said.

My main issue with Democrats and liberals isn't their policies, but their apparent hostility toward Christianity, even though they're generally accepting of other religions.

Christian politicians within the Democratic Party frequently minimize references to their faith, recognizing that overt discussions of Christianity are not typically embraced by many members of the party. Notably, President Biden diverged somewhat from this trend; he regularly referenced his Catholic upbringing and beliefs more than many other prominent Democratic Party figures.

I'm interested in James Talarico's rise; he openly discusses his faith and connects it to his policies. While I don't always agree with him, his openness about his faith is rare and refreshing within the Democratic Party.

There'd be a lot less of that hostility if American Christianity hadn't spent the last ~50 years selling itself out to the Republican party just to shore up its own power.

Outside a couple of hot button issues like abortion and gay marriage, traditional Christian moral teachings tend to line up better with the ideals of the modern center-left than they do those on the modern right. Broadly speaking, the right's affinity has been for the powerful while the left's affinity has been for groups without power. But while the left can certainly go overboard at times, they're at least pointing in the same direction at Christian teachings.

The role of Christians and church involvement in politics is subject to considerable debate. Personally, I believe it is un-biblical for churches to participate directly in political matters, and pastors should refrain from endorsing political. Nevertheless, as Christians, we have a civic duty to vote and actively engage in the political process.

However, whether Christians align themselves with the Republican party or not is not the issue.

The issue is that many liberals are perceived as hostile to Christians, despite Christians making up 66% of the population. Political parties should aim to win over voters, not alienate such a significant group. The Democratic Party's lack of engagement with this large voter base highlights strategic ignorance.
