  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Because the big beautiful bill will kill an extra 50,000 Americans a year by knocking them off healthcare!
No. That is not accurate at all.

There is no "Schumer shutdown."

And since the Trump administration has proven themselves untrustworthy in every single contact they've had with Democrats (and with the American people--look at his campaign promises) Schumer is correct to do his best for 26 million Americans on the ACA, and many thousands of hospital and medical employees who will lose their jobs if their services become unaffordable to 26 million Americans and demand drops drastically.
You wouldn't be referring to releasing the Epstein files would you? Come on - as Trump said - are people still talking about that?

(Quick! Send the National Guard into Chicago - that'll flood the zone and put them off the Epstein thing for a bit!)

Military families brace for missed paychecks as shutdown impacts are already accumulating

Service members did receive a paycheck on October 1, but with Congress seemingly still gridlocked, families are figuring out how they’ll cope if their pay doesn’t arrive on October 15 as scheduled.

In the last week, military children have already seen after-school programs and activities canceled en masse due to the slowing of federal funds to military schools, disrupting any sense of relative normalcy those families depend on, two of the sources told CNN.

“All activities, even homework club, which some kids absolutely need to maintain their academics,” have been paused, said a third spouse, who is stationed in Guam. “These kids have already made sacrifices for the government, like their dad missing more birthdays and holidays than I can count, and unfairly have this burden too.”

Some of the programs serve as essential child care for service members who work long hours often with little flexibility in their schedules.

Johnson, in shift, signals no vote during shutdown for military pay

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Wednesday signaled opposition to moving a stand-alone bill to pay military service members during a government shutdown, walking back his Tuesday statement saying he was open to holding such a vote.

If the shutdown drags on and Congress does not pass a bill to pay the troops or reopen the government, Oct. 15 will mark the first time in the modern times that service members missed a paycheck during a government shutdown. In previous shutdowns, Congress had either already funded the military or passed a measure to ensure troop pay.

Asked in a press conference Wednesday if he would move a bill by unanimous consent to pay the troops if the shutdown drags into next week — which would not require bringing back all House members to vote if there were no objections — Johnson signaled he would not.

I posted this in the other shutdown thread, but I meant to post it here.

Marjorie Taylor Greene on twitter...

"The Republican controlled Senate used the nuclear option today to override the 60 vote rule in order to confirm over 100 Trump nominees, yet continues to claim Democrats are causing the shutdown.

Spoiler alert, the Republicans in the Senate can also use the nuclear option to reopen the government and override the Democrats just like they literally did today to confirm Trump nominees."

It's funny how unstable the USA's Presidential system is. The USA's democracy seems to be one of the rare times the whole concept was designed from the ground up. Most former British Empire nations inherited the Westminster System of Parliamentary democracy - which has slowly evolved over time rather than being designed bespoke.

Australia had something similar to a 'government shutdown' in 1975 which resulted in "The Dismissal" when the Governor General - for the first and only time in our history - sent a telegram to her Majesty to inform her that he was firing our Prime Minister! It's 50 years this year - so no doubt Aussies are going to be flooded with Dismissal doco's.

But this whole business of the Federal government shutting down seems to happen every few administrations in the US. That's very messy - very messy indeed!

No, it did not need to happen this way - it could have happened in November when it was originally scheduled and agreed upon - hmmm.. why the need to change? I wonder.
Wait, wait.... are you claiming that the GOP agreed to extend the ACA subsidies last November, well before the so-called Big Beautiful Bill passed? Cool. Could you please provide documentation on that, so I can save it and frame it for posterity?

it is scheduled for THIS November to be in committee. Schumer is using it as an excuse.

I thought MAGA had all layers of government? How is this shutdown even possible - and why can't MAGA do something about it?

Oh, so it's scheduled to happen, but hasn't happened yet. So you're saying that democrats should just trust that the GOP will bargain in good faith a month from now, when there's no government shutdown to force their hand?

Yeah, we know how that works.

Lucy football bw.jpg

Schumer is using it as an excuse.
Schumer is using the shutdown as a tactic, to force the GOP to come to the table and negotiate. That they haven't, and don't seem willing to, shows the electorate that the GOP doesn't care about them, or whether or not their health care can be affordable.

But, rather than deal with the issue of health care, the GOP would rather throw blame around and pretend they're more than willing to talk about this....later. When their back isn't against the wall.

-- A2SG, and I'm sure that football will be there when I kick it, right Lucy?

The big abominable bill passed in March because financial bills don't need 60 votes, and 53 Republicans support abombinations.

WATCH: Schumer speaks after Senate Democrats reject latest measure to end shutdown

Democrats are demanding that Congress extend healthcare benefits, while Republicans are refusing to commit to anything until the government is reopened. They are trying to wear Democrats down to vote for a House-passed bill that would reopen the government temporarily, mostly at current spending levels.

The bipartisan bill passed in the House - Schumer is using the shut down for political gains -
