  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It could just be a coincidence.
I am just going to take a shot in the dark here (no pun intended) and wager that it is some leftist angry with abc for caving under the pressure of the FCC and shot up the building to communicate their disapproval. There may be more fiery but mostly peaceful protests in the future.

It could just be a coincidence.
It's not coincidence

A coincidence is the unplanned, simultaneous occurrence of events or things that appear to have a connection, but are not causally linked.

The "protestors" were not there by coincidence ... .

The "protestors" were not there at all. From the OP:

There were no protesters near the building at the time of the shooting.

An arrest has been made, I can't link to the story from my device. 64 yo male.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Police in Sacramento announced an arrest in the investigation of a shooting at ABC10's office.
64-year-old Anibal Hernandezsantana was arrested at a home in Sacramento, the Sacramento Police Department said on a X post early Saturday.
Hernandezsantana's charges include assault with a deadly weapon, shooting into an occupied building, and negligent discharge of a firearm, police said.

I don't understand the angst over Jimmy Kimmel. People who watch late night television want to be entertained, they don't want politics. I suspect ABC had long wanted to get rid of him because of the poor ratings but would have lost even more money breaking the contract they had with him. I'm guessing they were able to interpret his comments as violating the terms of his contract which gave them a cost free means of dropping him. I'm curious to see if he tries to fight it in court.

I don't know why you think that is true. Some do, some don't and some want a combination.
I suspect ABC had long wanted to get rid of him because of the poor ratings but would have lost even more money breaking the contract they had with him.
He had good ratings in his slot. If this had been just the decision of ABC, no one would have said anything.
I'm guessing they were able to interpret his comments as violating the terms of his contract which gave them a cost free means of dropping him. I'm curious to see if he tries to fight it in court.
The reason for the angst is that the FCC head, Brendon Carr, threatened ABC to cancel him or else because they didn't like his joke about Trump's answer to a reporter's question, "How are you holding up [after the death of your friend]?"

Trump replied that he was doing fine and the ballroom was coming along nicely. Kimmel's awful joke? "That's how a four year old mourns a dead goldfish". For this, he was suspended. For a joke about Trump - from a comedian. This is seriously against the First Amendment - the government censoring speech.

If ABC did for ratings, ABC should have said so, but they claimed it was because he made inappropriate remarks Charlie Kirk. When he didn't . When he just told the truth, and wasn't harsh on Charlie. And ABC said, that they won't take him until he apologizes and puts money into Charlie Kirk Turning Point USA. That's what people are upset about. But nobody should be so upset, that they shoot someone.

The alleged gunman, a former health policy analyst for the California Indian Health Board, posted on X the day before the shooting, seemingly wishing for Trump’s death, the outlet reported.

“Where is a good heart attack when we need it the most?? Please Join in my thoughts and prayers for the physical demise of our fearful leader.” the post read.

In July, after Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show” was canceled, Hernandez-Santana raged online that “the authoritarian oligarchy is now complete” and urged others to “fight like hell.”

I don't necessarily think it takes the Law & Order special unit to "crack the code" on this one.

That was probably the last straw regarding a 22 year old failing show. It's not just ABC but Disney too. Disney got flooded with complaints. The sponsors got flooded with complaints. The sponsors in turn complained to Disney. Jimmy Kimmel became too much of a potato.

You keep saying that, yet even ABC/Disney hasn't made that argument. Are you just trying to assuage your own cognitive dissonance about supporting an administration that's so blatantly violating the first amendment?

Without looking it up, what do you think cognitive dissonance means?

It's the angst you feel when you hold two beliefs in opposition to each other.

What is this?
Of course they are fine with politics.

And what is he even getting in trouble for? Pointing out Trump's callousness 2 days after his friend died. That joke was hilarious and perfectly apropos to the video of Trump he showed.

It's hilarious how callous he is and nobody cares.

Besides, compared to his compatriots, his ratings are right smack dab in the middle.
