Many Christians and Bible scholars place the crucifixion in 33 AD, on Friday, April 3, not 30 AD. But it might well be that the crucifixion happened in 30 AD. I will need to study the differences between the two—some place the crucifixion in 32 AD, others on a Wednesday in 31 AD. "In the heart of the earth" doesn't seem to fit well with "in the hands of evil men". It was not just death, but a location where Jesus would be. Jesus should have said he would be in the hands of evil men three days and three nights if what is meant. Once a man kills you he has no more power to torment you further.I'm also on the Good Friday Team. But I never thought about: "If Christ had been dead for 72 hours then His body would have begun to decay and would have "seen corruption". That's a pretty good one. I might add that to my repertoire.
The way I understand it is that Christ was Crucified on Friday, April 7, 30AD. The evidence for timing of this can then force the understanding of the text. I can go back to Leviticus, get the instructions for Passover, and use calendars from that time to count the new moon and find the time when Jesus said in Luke:
Luke 12:4
“I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do.
So, once Jesus died, there was nothing more that evil men could do to him. Since Jesus gave a location for himself to be in the heart of the earth, I see no need to start from his capture. He indeed prophesied he would be in the hands of sinful men, but he didn't say he would be in the hands of sinful men for three days and three nights.
Falling into the hands of wicked men and being scourged and beaten did indeed fall on the same day he died but Jesus did not say he would be in the hands of wicked men three days and three nights. Once he died there was nothing more they could do with him.
