There it goes!

Modest height fountains (50-100 m) and a long delay from the previous episode (2 weeks, just like the last time).

Episode 31 was kind of crazy with the sideways fountain.

The main vent (shown below) sprayed "sideways" at about a 45-degree angle with lava reaching about 100 m during most of the 12 hour episode traveling as far as 300 m before striking the crater floor.

The "south vent" that reopened in episode 30 had small fountaining for part of the episode to about 10 m high and a new, "intermediate vent" opened between them higher up in the "cone" at some broken rocks that had a history of large gas emissions and glowing. That new "intermediate" vent reach maximum heights of 20-30 m.

The steady "sideways" plume with a fairly fixed direction established a single lava channel under the "landing zone" with tephra and splatter building some long structures on either side with modest height.

Episode 31 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 2:04 p.m. HST on August 22, with lava fountaining from the north vent.

Finally a post eruption image of the aftermath shows the old "drain" in post #59 has been filled in, so the next time it overflows the lava is going to have to get a lot higher, near the top of the old rim. (I double checked against another view, but we don't need the extra image.)

The next (32) episode seems likely and several days away, but here is a snapshot of the vent after the last episode:

It looks like a cave. No wonder the lava came out at a 45-degree angle.

Our "cave like" vent opening is glowing and there was even some spatter in the last hour, but who knows how long it will take to do something more interesting. I thought the vent looked like a cave with a fire insie:

It could take hours or days. The USGS has new images of themselves working and a new map. The current lava flow for this eruption (Dec 23 to date) covers 3.66 sq km to an average depth of 40 m.

Current windshear and convection conditions on the south side of the fountain are perfect to creating rotating tornado-like vortices of volcanic pumice, ash, and dust. These are similar to dust devils seen in the desert.

The vortices on the south side of the fountain can be seen on the V3 streaming camera. The vortices are carrying volcanic pumice fragments up to 1000 feet into the air! The pumice looks like swarms of dark, angry bees on the webcam.

"dark, angry bees" was their language. Ref

Episode 32 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption started around 6:35 a.m. HST this morning, September 2, 2025. Lava fountains exceeded 330 feet (100 meters) in height, inclined to the northeast and are feeding lava flows on the western half of the crater floor.
