We don't have issues with egg prices here, but my wife and I have joked that we'll get a few silkie chickens at some point for pets just because they're fluffy.

Before you do that, check out Brad from Useless Farm. Maybe Brad was special, but

I hear that Guinea hens are nice and they are great tick eaters.

Large US Midwest coffee roaster hikes prices as tariffs hit

The National Coffee Association has requested an exemption from 10% tariffs imposed on most goods imported into the U.S. as the United States - the world’s largest consumer of coffee - is unable to produce the beans. So far, there has been no decision from the government.

The tariffs are only exacerbating pain for the U.S. coffee industry. Prices for beans surged 70% in 2024 and are [up] another 15% this year after bad weather hit production in key countries.

Coffee = 70% + 15% + 10% tariff = 95% increase for your morning cup of joe.

I couldn’t imagine the prices at starbucks and the like. I’m glad I gave them up and make it at home.
I mean... Starbucks has to pay for rent and wages, so doubling the price of coffee won't double the prices the charge.

That said, everyone should make their own coffee at home in the mornings.

Hershey and other chocolate makers hike prices as cocoa remains near record highs

[Not tariffs, says Hershey, but] "It reflects the reality of rising ingredient costs including the unprecedented cost of cocoa,” Hershey said in a statement.

[Cocoa prices are more than double what they were 2 years ago.]

Cocoa prices have more than doubled over the past two years due to poor weather and disease in West Africa, which supplies more than 70% of the world’s cocoa.

Nestle's seems more honest. There is a dynamic going on with supply and prices in some commodities where the tariff is triggering price hikes worldwide. Most of these products are agricultural and metals that the US imports. Coffee, Cocoa and Aluminum are prime examples. Inversely, products the USA exports are seeing price declines. Wheat, Corn and Soy are on that list. Also the US dollar is off 5-10% so that too raises prices for some imported goods but lower the cost of US exports.

In the end we all we have higher prices on most things, until spending is so tight that certain areas like housing will take a hit.

"CEO Laurent Freixe said the company was considering further price rises this year.
  • The KitKat maker said U.S. tariffs risk exacerbating existing commodity price pressures.
  • Revenues at the packaged food giant were up 2.9% in the six months to June, led by price rises of 2.7%.

Swiss food giant Nestle said Thursday that prices for its KitKat bars and Nespresso coffee pods could rise further in the second half of this year, as U.S. tariffs risk exacerbating existing commodity price pressures." Nestle flags further potential price hikes as tariffs, commodities weigh on margins

Let's watch each month and make the 2026 election a referendum on the keeping of those promises.
1) Does inflation go down each month compared to a year ago?
2) Do food prices go down, actually go down as promised?
3) Does the price of eggs go down?
4) Do gas prices go down?
I'm waiting for Trump's promise to cut drug prices by 1500%, so drug companies start paying us to take their drugs. LOL

Some companies held off on price hikes as Trump delayed tariffs. That ends soon.

Major consumer brands like Procter & Gamble, Mondelēz and Hershey warn the tariffs will drive up costs on everyday products from popular snacks to common household items.

Experts have warned that elevated tariffs would mean higher prices on consumers, but President Donald Trump's delays mean some of the most expansive and aggressive tariffs have yet to be implemented.

That changes Friday, when Trump’s reworked global tariffs take effect after he suspended them in mid-April. Some are as high as 50% for countries like Brazil, while others are 15% to 30% for the European Union and countries like South Korea, Japan and India.

The apparel sector is also feeling the pressure and warning of price hikes. The German sportswear giant Adidas said Wednesday that it might have to raise prices, in the United States only, because of the significant impact tariffs will have on the company’s cost of U.S. goods. Adidas reported tariffs would add around 200 million euros ($231 million) in costs in the second half of this year.

On Tuesday, Stanley Black & Decker said it expects to incur an $800 million annualized impact from policy changes that are tied to tariffs. And Conagra Brands said tariffs are likely to raise costs of goods sold by 3%, which would be an annual increase of more than $200 million, according to its CEO, Sean Connolly.

GOP Congressman on Trump Tariffs: ‘Prices Are Up’ but It’s ‘For the Good of the Country’

“I think a lot of people are seeing higher prices,” said Norman. “Our family’s in the construction business, and we get a lot of our timber from Canada and other countries. Yes, it’s higher. Steel prices are up, but it’s for the good of the country.”

“Should we expect high prices for a short time? Yes,” he continued. “But overall, we couldn’t keep going the way we were going… That’s why this president is doing such a good job.”

How long will it be until it's not a short time and it becomes obvious the president is doing a bad job on his promise to lower prices?

It's always going to get worse before it gets better. It will never come around to getting better.

Maybe Trump should get an economics Nobel prize as his lackeys think.

However, I think not. There may be some positive effects, but those will come from bullying not tariffs. Bullying alone (and then no broad based 20% tax is much different than bullying alone. Originally, it was to be 10% for everyone plus a few crazy rates there for bullying purposes.

Certainly, there is exactly zero reason for tariffs because a country sells you goods and doesn't buy from you. If so, consider me and my terrible grocery store. I buy lots and lots from them and they buy nothing from me. TERRIBLE.

But there have been benefits from the bullying. could be a positive. Also, Trump's protective tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos could be argued (wrongly) to be of benefit. This kind of tariffs have been supporting by the Democrat left for decades. It is absolutely hilarious to see Democrats rail against the policies that Sanders has tried so hard to implement.

There are NO economic benefits from an across the board tariffs. These tariffs are simply a sales tax on imports. The higher the tariffs, the higher the tax on consumers. Many countries have removed many, if not all, of their tariffs on US goods. This will greatly benefit consumers. EUROPEAN consumers. They will pay less for American goods.

If you ask me, I'm seeing tariffs as an end run around the VAT tax. Its interesting to me that so many oppose tariffs becauae its a tax on the people. Yet they live in areas that tax the people and support raising taxes on the people. In our country we have very few Democrats who have never met a tax they didnt like. Except the tariff of course.

Personally, I have the gut feeling I dont like the tariffs as they stand. Im okay with them being used to get fair trade because other countries use them as well. I mean we didnt hear any Canadians crying about tariffs American goods which caused them to pay higher prices. Same goes for European countries. Either they are a tax on the people or they are not.

And if they are then no anyone opposing tariffs in America should also oppose any tariffs in their own cou try for the same reason.

whatever

The effect on US consumers is very direct. An imported product used to cost $100. Now (from 20% countries), the cost is somewhere between say $110. We might find a similar US product for $105 and buy it. We then would ONLY be paying 5% more. I suppose all the tariff could be absorbed by the producer and importing company. That would mean that the company was extracting exorbitant profits. Unless this were a product for which there was no substitute, this rarely happens. Someone would have undercut the producer long ago.
======
There is no reasonable scenario where the price goes down on an important good with a 20% tariff.

I’ve always found it strange how the Nation with the most money elected a person who had the absolute audacity to assert that we were getting bested at doing capitalism.
And, a part of his “solution” to make things more expensive.
We’re already numero uno, wealth doesn’t flow any higher than the pinnacle.

Trying to remain number-one will be a lot harder if we provoke the rest of the world’s nations from wanting to continue to deal with us as the richest country.

Oh, so “raising taxes” is a “good thing” if it’s spread around to everyone and not just raised on people (and corporations) who hold the vast majority of the wealth?

Good to know.
