What James is saying there is that true faith is always accompanied by action/works (when possible - can be exceptions like the thief on the cross). If you have true faith in Christ as your Lord and Savior, you're not just going to sit around and never serve Him. Faith involves being surrendered to Christ and being willing to obey Him and serve Him. If someone says they believe, but do nothing to show that and back it up, then their faith is dead, as James said. It isn't that the works save us, it's that the works are the evidence that our faith is genuine. Paul taught that God has good works prepared for those who become saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-10), so if someone isn't doing any good works, then that would be evidence that they aren't really saved and their faith isn't genuine.

This is really simple. When a person believes in Jesus for God's free gift of Eternal Life. God knows at the very moment of belief, the person has believed in Jesus, God does not need a person to go out and do works So God can say hey this person really believed.

But there is more to the life of a born again child of God than just believing in Jesus. There is fellowship with other believers and the doing the works God has for believers to do while living on earth. So at the judgment seat of The Messiah for believers concerning rewards, they will have a good judgment.

Why stop short of posting verses as James continues to go on and write. My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.

See James is not writing to just the 12 tribes but to believers of the 12 tribes

People read a scripture about sheep and goats (works and no works) and think themselves always, only and ever a sheep.

BUT

the fact is, we ALL do goat works whenever we don't do sheep works.

People read the scripture where Jesus said "Depart from me ye workers of iniquity." And they always, only and ever think that is NOT going to be spoken to them, YET we ALL work iniquity.

Funny how the mind works to deceive us, ain't it? Funny how the mind works to falsely justify us, ain't it?

And how does anyone know a believer is or isn't doing any good works? As far as I know, the poster didn't mention anything about whether the good works were public or private-only that such good fruit is necessary. God knows either way, and is the rightful judge- of the heart-and anything that comes out of it for better or worse.
