FEMA staff baffled after head said he was unaware of US hurricane season, sources say

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, FEMA's parent agency, said the comment was a joke and that FEMA is prepared for hurricane season.

[Fortunately, he's not really the boss.] Richardson, who has no disaster response experience, said during Monday's briefing, a daily all-hands meeting held by phone and videoconference, that he will not be issuing a new disaster plan because he does not want to make changes that might counter the [Trump initiated] FEMA Review Council, the sources said.

The spokesperson said under Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Richardson "FEMA is shifting from bloated, DC-centric dead weight to a lean, deployable disaster force that empowers state actors to provide relief for their citizens."

[Empowering is conservative speak for 'Do it yourself'. Want healthcare or foodstamps? Why not try empowering yourself by getting a job like your parents did?]

Richardson's comments come amid widespread concern that the departures of a raft of top FEMA officials, staff cuts and reductions in hurricane preparations will leave the agency ill-prepared for a storm season forecast to be above normal.

I’m sure they have plenty of sharpies on hand.

Hurricane season is made up by bottled water companies.

Don't forget Big Plywood.

You are forgetting Big roofing. Having watched, during a hurricane, as a roof got torn off a building (not sure how the roofing companies hid the guys that made the roof look like it blew off), I know the power of Big roofing companies!

While Trump overhauls FEMA, Mississippi mid-March tornado survivors await assistance

President Donald Trump has pointed to these waits [between a disaster and a disaster declaration] as a reason he is considering dismantling the agency, calling FEMA “very bureaucratic” and “very slow.”

Tornado-ravaged voters in MAGA stronghold reveal glaring problem with Trump's 'America First'

The wider southern Mississippi area was ravaged by almost 20 tornadoes in total over a one-week period, damaging thousands of homes and businesses.

Several of the red-state residents said they haven't seen a single federal agent in the two months since, despite the widespread carnage.

'I know President Trump said that "America First, we're gonna help our American folks first," but we haven't seen the federal folks down here,' Tylertown resident Bobby McGinnis told PBS.

'I don't know what you got to do or what you got to have to be able to be declared for a federal disaster area because this is pretty bad,' said another Tylertown local, Brian Lowery.

'We can't help you because, whatever, we're waiting on a letter; we're waiting on somebody to sign his name. You know, all that. I'm just over it.'

Just like with social security, the people who complain the loudest when it gets taken away are going to be the frauds.

People would more pull themselves up by their bootstraps if the boots didn’t now come with a tariff markup.

President Donald Trump announced plans to phase out the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) after this year's hurricane season, leaving emergency managers around the country baffled.

The president told reporters Tuesday at the White House that he intended to shift responsibility for disaster response to the "state level," saying governors "should be able to handle it," and if not, "then maybe they shouldn’t be governor," while also saying the federal government would start distributing less aid for recovery – and what funding was provided would come directly from the president's office, reported CNN.

“The FEMA thing has not been a very successful experiment,” Trump said Tuesday. “It’s extremely expensive, and again, when you have a tornado or a hurricane or you have a problem of any kind in a state, that’s what you have governors for. They’re supposed to fix those problems.”

[But possibly, if your supplication is pleasing, Trump will make with some aid.]

Gov. Abbott of TX is on the FEMA Review Countil. As is the top emergency official in Texas, W. Nim Kidd

"FEMA is slow and clunky and doesn't solve the needs of those who need it the most," Abbott said at the first meeting of the FEMA Review Council in May. "States have proven that we can move more nimbly, more swiftly, more effectively."

Now, as Texas responds to catastrophic floods, the officials leading the state's efforts will also be considering how to reshape, or even dissolve, the country's top disaster response agency.

As far as the president's stated goal of getting rid of the agency in its current form, only Congress can eliminate FEMA completely. But the executive branch can act on its own to restructure or reduce the size of the agency.

Maybe not such a great idea after all. Who knew?

Trump administration scraps plan to abolish FEMA, Washington Post reports

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has backed away from abolishing the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Washington Post reported on Friday, ahead of the president's visit to flood-hit Texas.

No official action was being taken to wind down FEMA, and changes in the agency would probably amount to a "rebranding" that would emphasize state leaders' roles in disaster response, the Washington Post reported, citing a senior White House official.

The Texas floods, the first major deadly disaster since Trump took office in January vowing to gut or abolish FEMA, were a stark reminder of the extent to which states lean on the agency during a crisis.

Oh no. They'll go through the motions and once this story dies down and the over 100 still missing and presumed dead of found, kill FEMA will be back on. Now if this event was in California, there would be no temporary reverse.

Texas seems to have broken up the logjam. Federal response to some other disasters is belatedly and slowly inching forward, months later.

FEMA moved quickly to help Texas. These other states are still waiting.

Trump and the Federal Emergency Management Agency moved quickly to support Texas, approving Abbott’s disaster declaration the next day.

And the robust response to the flooding in Texas contrasts sharply with delays faced by other states that have sustained deadly floods and other disasters this year, FEMA staff and state disaster officials say.

Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan and West Virginia had been waiting since the spring for the federal government to approve their requests for assistance, with some governors continuously pushing the White House for answers.

Then, in a flurry of Truth Social posts Tuesday evening, Trump announced he had signed disaster declarations for those four states, freeing up millions of dollars in federal aid. [In some cases, only part of the request is being approved.]

At least six states and two Native American tribes are still waiting for the president and FEMA to approve their requests for disaster response and recovery assistance. Critical services such as temporary housing, unemployment assistance, search-and-rescue crews and debris removal are also on hold because of bureaucratic obstacles at the Department of Homeland Security, according to FEMA staffers, state disaster declaration requests and internal agency data obtained by The Washington Post.

Shortly after the publication of this article, Oregon and New Mexico officially received their disaster declarations, according to documents seen by The Post.

“FEMA is built to move fast when lives and infrastructure are on the line,” said a FEMA official with extensive experience in disaster response. “But it can’t do that if our highest levels of elected leadership treat disasters as inconvenient — or worse, as inconsistent with a selected narrative.”

State and local governments and struggling residents in ... Maryland, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota and Robinson Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California continue to wait for financial assistance and other resources to help them rebuild and pay for medical aid, funerals, first aid kits, infant formula, diapers and hotels, according to FEMA data and state disaster declarations obtained by The Post.

Many of the delays [in funding particular expenses] stem from a new policy requiring Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem to approve all FEMA expenses over $100,000.

According to the FEMA data, officials have been filling out multiple, redundant memo templates to justify needed services, leaving notes detailing the dire consequences of ignoring the requests. In many cases, staffers then hand-deliver the memos to the office of acting FEMA administrator David Richardson, so he can forward them to Noem.

“This isn’t just bureaucracy — it’s a system stall. Communities are waiting while their declaration requests collect dust,” said the FEMA official, who has responded to 20 disasters. “That kind of delay doesn’t happen by accident — it happens when things upstream are broken, sidelined or intentionally buried.”

Ok, let's not get too hasty.

Trump admin. denies disaster assistance after Western Maryland floods; state will appeal decision

"Based on our review of all the information available, it has been determined that supplemental federal assistance under the Stafford Act is not warranted. Therefore, I must inform you that your request for a major disaster declaration is denied," a letter from FEMA to Gov. Wes Moore read.

MD pols: "Marylanders in Allegany and Garrett Counties were hard-hit by May’s historically intense storms. Two months after flash flooding tore through these communities, they are still in need of support to repair public schools and libraries that were inundated, roads and bridges that were washed out, and homes and businesses that were left severely damaged. Even though the cost of the damage in these two rural Maryland counties exceeds the threshold for federal assistance, the Administration is refusing to come to their aid. We strongly urge the President to reconsider this decision and deliver federal resources to Allegany and Garrett Counties so they are not forced to shoulder the burden of recovery on their own."

FEMA to spend $608 million to house illegals

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has said DHS will tap FEMA’s $650-million shelter and services program to fund Florida’s [Alligator Alcatraz] facility. Congress during the Biden administration directed DHS to distribute the money to state and local governments to cover the cost of sheltering migrants. Nonprofits were also eligible. The funding stream was separate from money Congress set aside for FEMA to cover disaster relief.

Money well spent if they are housed in horrific conditions but a terrible waste if housed decently.

Survivors of Texas floods are grappling with trauma – and still waiting on financial help

One month after the Texas floods, some survivors are sounding the alarm, pleading for help they say still hasn’t arrived. Others are emerging from the nightmare with the support of a community rallying to clean up the devastation on their own.

It’s a long and uncertain road, burdened by complex insurance claims, government red tape, and financial strain.

[Government red tape? Didn't we fire a bunch of people to make all the red tape go away?]

For many survivors who lost their homes, it remains unclear how much support they’ll receive from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other government programs. Even if help comes, it won’t be quick.

[But that was only under the old "SLOW AND TOTALLY INEFFECTIVE" FEMA. The new vigorous MAGA FEMA must be faster and better.]

[Anyway, surely the state is stepping up. That was Trump's original idea for GREAT SAVINGS!]

Flood survivor Bud Bolton, a resident of Hunt, Texas, says the aid has been painfully slow, and in some cases, nonexistent.

“The state and county are helping us none,” Bolton told CNN.

"We don’t need toilet paper, bottled water, and few necessities and gift cards. We need financial help and are not getting it.”
