Large US Midwest coffee roaster hikes prices as tariffs hit

The National Coffee Association has requested an exemption from 10% tariffs imposed on most goods imported into the U.S. as the United States - the world’s largest consumer of coffee - is unable to produce the beans. So far, there has been no decision from the government.

The tariffs are only exacerbating pain for the U.S. coffee industry. Prices for beans surged 70% in 2024 and are [up] another 15% this year after bad weather hit production in key countries.

Coffee = 70% + 15% + 10% tariff = 95% increase for your morning cup of joe.

I couldn’t imagine the prices at starbucks and the like. I’m glad I gave them up and make it at home.

I mean... Starbucks has to pay for rent and wages, so doubling the price of coffee won't double the prices the charge.

That said, everyone should make their own coffee at home in the mornings.

Cocoa prices have more than doubled over the past two years due to poor weather and disease in West Africa, which supplies more than 70% of the world’s cocoa.

Nestle's seems more honest. There is a dynamic going on with supply and prices in some commodities where the tariff is triggering price hikes worldwide. Most of these products are agricultural and metals that the US imports. Coffee, Cocoa and Aluminum are prime examples. Inversely, products the USA exports are seeing price declines. Wheat, Corn and Soy are on that list. Also the US dollar is off 5-10% so that too raises prices for some imported goods but lower the cost of US exports.

In the end we all we have higher prices on most things, until spending is so tight that certain areas like housing will take a hit.
