Trump says he wants to deport ‘the worst of the worst,’ but ICE data shows 72% of people detained have no criminal convictions

The latest ICE statistics show that as of June 29, there were 57,861 people detained by ICE, 41,495 — 71.7% — of whom had no criminal convictions. That includes 14,318 people with pending criminal charges and 27,177 who are subject to immigration enforcement, but have no known criminal convictions or pending criminal charges.

They are arresting farm workers, the gardeners, the day laborers, the people who go to their citizenship appointments but just haven't finished that long process, while seeking entrance in elementary schools and little league practices. Which leads to this:

Trump Loves ICE. Its Workforce Has Never Been So Miserable.

A “mission impossible” deportation campaign has left many employees burned out and morally conflicted.

The reality of Trump’s mass-deportation campaign is far less glamorous. Officers and agents have spent much of the past five months clocking weekends and waking up at 4 a.m. for predawn raids. Their top leaders have been ousted or demoted, and their supervisors—themselves under threat of being fired—are pressuring them to make more and more arrests to meet quotas set by the Trump adviser Stephen Miller. Having insisted for years that capturing criminals is its priority, ICE is now shelving major criminal investigations to prioritize civil immigration arrests, grabbing asylum seekers at their courthouse hearings, handcuffing mothers as their U.S.-citizen children cry, chasing day laborers through Home Depot parking lots. As angry onlookers attempt to shame ICE officers with obscenities, and activists try to dox them, officers are retreating further behind masks and tactical gear.
“It’s miserable,” one career ICE official told me. He called the job “mission impossible.”
I recently spoke with a dozen current and former ICE agents and officers about morale at the agency since Trump took office. Most spoke on the condition of anonymity, for fear of losing their job or being subjected to a polygraph exam. They described varying levels of dissatisfaction but weren’t looking to complain or expecting sympathy—certainly not at a time when many Americans have been disturbed by video clips of masked and hooded officers seizing immigrants who were not engaged in any obvious criminal behavior. The frustration isn’t yet producing mass resignations or major internal protests, but the officers and agents described a workforce on edge, vilified by broad swaths of the public and bullied by Trump officials demanding more and more.

58 thousand out of an estimated 11 million unauthorized immigrants, means 0.53% of them have been detained. As for the usual anonymous informants, that's 12 out of 8,500 assigned to Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). Which is 0.14%.

So in summary, 0.53% of unauthorized immigrants have been detained. And 0.14% of ICE enforcement officers say they're worn out.

Hey, at least they have better job security than most federal employees. They'll feel much better about their work once they've eliminated all the fentanyl smuggling, right? Sure, there are a lot of detractors, but there are a lot of people cheering them on, too. I would imagine that there are plenty of MAGA faithful who are applying to become ICE agents now.

I have to admit, though, they're not going to feel very welcome if they come to my state. Sorry about that in advance, but we've become kinda fond of our migrant workers.

Kind of shows how useless that approach to enforcement really is, don't it? But it makes for good red meat for the base.

From what I've heard it's pretty much dried up the flow entering illegally. And has encouraged many to go back on their own. I think in the end it will have achieved good results. And there will still be many millions of immigrants living here.

In six months, 0.53% of unauthorized immigrants have been detained. At this rate, by January 2029, about 5%—around 550,000 individuals—may be detained and possibly deported.

Is this the objective of Trump administration?

According to what I read the objective of the Trump administration is 1 million deportations per year, which would be 4 million by 2029. I suppose that may also include those who self-deport.

What about the other 7 million unauthorized immigrants?

Seems rather inefficient. When does DOGE audit DHS?

Trump is doing as promised and deporting the people his base want to be deported. Let's not overcomplicate things.

You tell me. However it seems to have gone from being a horrifically large quota, to an insufficient amount.
The quota is large but what they’re actually pulling off is not especially for all the human and civil rights abuses they’re committing just put up these tiny numbers.

The whole thing in reality - as opposed to all of the hysteria, hype and sensationalism connected to it - is really no big deal.

I thought that his base wanted deportation of all undocumented immigrants.

Right, that's why it's 'mission impossible'. Getting rid of all of them was always a pipe dream.

Well yeah, it is a horrifically large quota in terms of personnel, facilities and logistics, but insufficient to satisfy America First.

The goal is deporting 4 million out of 11 million which is 36% of them by 2029.

Now on one hand I'm hearing that not only are they going to deport all unauthorized immigrants, leaving us with zero lettuce pickers, they are also going to deport every American citizen who disagrees with Trump. Whereas on the other hand I'm hearing they're only going to end up deporting a mere smattering of people. Which is it?

He promised to go after criminals, now those groups like the Floridian Cuban MAGA bloc are finding out far more than just criminals. But yes, it has always been about deporting the brown folks, criminals or not. Not complicated at least to me at all.
