It's not the suffering that you need to be focusing on... it's the courage, the fortitude, and the perseverance that comes embodied in that suffering.

Rob the world of its struggles, and you rob it of much of its beauty.

Indeed it's natural to grieve, but it's also natural to be proud. Don't think that one negates the other, when in truth it's only through one that life creates the other.

Take life, with all of its ugliness and suffering, and hold it in your hands... yes, there's suffering, but there's also beauty.

Be proud, and honored, and appreciative, for you have life, and don't begrudge that from which its beauty comes.
I do think that is true.

Perhaps I just dont see how the word to sum all that up would be "cool".

I could imagine in the past before media, the internet and social media news would travel slow. By the time they got the news something else would happen. I remeber the art of letter writing. There was something about writing a letter that is not present in todays media.

Though it was often sad news such as during the war, it was personal. But also the good news could make a persons day, week and even year.

Now its in your face and coming at you 24/7 in 101 different ways. Which has its benefits if you know when to detach from being sucked into the vortext of the WWW.

There was a degree of quietness before the electronic age. I literally think humans are sort of becoming machines or virtual humans and this is desensitising some people. Especially young people or the generation that has grown up with this most of their lives and they know little else.

I think studies have shown more negative effects of constant use of electronic media and social media. It think its personalised things and made personal stuff public and this can turn bad real quick airing dirty washing in public. Then it becomes an everyday occurrance that we are hearing trivial stories about every detail of someones breakup or scam or double crossing.

Too much info. I try not to watch any of it. I was into it but now when I even hear the tone of the voice it sounds like complaining or stressed. What happened to the old news readers that use to be so clinical lol. A major disaster happens and they are reading the news in a monotone voice. I think they were tld not to show any emotion lol.

But I do remeber there were good news items included as well. We can see an increase in negative news as time goes on. I think this is a evolution of the culture becming more personalised. The political becoming the personal and social media allowing the personal. Which tends to always be about negative. Which is a natural human tendency I think when and it becomes a self fullfilling prophesy that the more we look at the negative the more it becomes negative.

Because it's life. The universe has been evolving and changing for billions of years. A tumultuous crucible of stars being born, and stars dying... and nothing there to know what that feels like. But we do... because we have life... we know what it feels like to exist, and that's so very, very cool.

In our day to day lives we get lost in the minutiae, but we need to take a step back every once in a while and recognize that we are the universe... alive, for one fleeting moment in time we get to know what existing feels like. Yes, we get to know the suffering... our small portion of the stars being born and the stars dying, and we can cry, and grieve, and lament that it happens. But we can also be humbled for having gotten to experience it.

So @Chesterton can come and punch me in the face if he really wants to, such is life, it does what it does. The towers fell, people died, and it was sad, but I will carry that memory with me as long as I am able, and that's what makes it cool.

God made me, and every bit of me is a gift.

There, that's it, I've said my piece.

Am I imagining it or have the news articles and headlines become more negative. It seemed as when Joe Biden was in office there was an aire of happiness in alot of the news stories and the only negative stories were coming from Fox News and their conservative companions. Now, practically every news feed I have on my computer is either someone famous dying, shootings all over the US and in other countries, nations arguing about taxes, immigrants or some other political dilemma, economic turmoil, war.

It is very discouraging. But what makes me mad is if this is just a mainstream media attempt at making the Trump Admin. the cause of all these woes. Surely happy stories couldn't have just disappeared just like that. Where is the positiveness of our space program, where is the positiveness of our cultures coming to together and celebrating life. Yes, our country is forcing immigrants to come to America the legal and proper way and it looks messy but Spanish, Latinos, Asians, Africans and Europeans have never been this close before in America. Don't let the negativity of the liberal media separate us. Remember E. Pluribus Unum. Follow God and He will lead us to goodness.
'No news is good news' and you can spin that with either hand.

Some things that the humans do are not very cool. Creating pointless suffering for other beings comes to mind.

But I do remember what I remember hearing what a political writer said about All In the Family...

Paraphrasing because I don't have it committed verbatim:

"The show taught me what a staunch conservative and hardline liberal were...
On one side, you had a man who refuses to accept changes that challenge the way things used to be due to a myopic sense of nostalgia...
And his opposite, an unemployed college-educated activist who lives in his house for free, eats his food, and repays him by calling him a bigot"

There is some accuracy to that in terms of describing our current political tension lol
When the show began, the son-in-law was a college student. After he was graduated, he became a teacher/academic.
I'm pretty sure the liberals of today, would all likely have been dead in the 1800's, because if this is too much to handle, they certainly couldn't have handled no electricity or transportation.

Essentially, today is a battle between the living, and the hypothetical dead.
What is the point of this insult?

Lions killing gazelles on the plains of Africa isn't very 'cool' either... but it's life.

I meant "some" liberals. Not all. Definitely not anyone on this forum.

I edited the post to reflect that error in my miscommunication.

We have good reasons for judging human behavior differently from animal behavior. We dont presume to be in a position to comment on what its like to be a lion.

Humans wiping out entire other natural habitats one by one is not cool. Not in itself. Not to observe from a zen detached distance either.

Kind of a pointless statement, that same applies to some conservatives of today as well. So essentially... Just some people.

But the liberal media controls the narrative. Even though CNN and MSNBC aren't doing that great, the local news still just chimes what they say or they repeat the headlines of the Washington Post or the New York Times. In all these news outlets, you get doom and gloom. Like someone posted here, these news outlets had the economy great under Biden. I liked some of the stuff Obama did as did the news outlets. In their eyes, he did nothing wrong. It was those "wicked" Republicans who were causing all the problems,

I'm sure the news media had a good idea of all the illegal immigrants in this country but they said nothing over the years. The problem just got worse and worse. Now there is someone in the White House who is going after the illegal immigrants (who are using our tax payer dollars) and there is a big stink. I don't see anybody pointing fingers at the officials who turned a blind eye to the illegal immigration. I believe the US is allowed to tighten it's border and get rid of all the illegals if it so chooses.

A lot of liberal minded people are causing this stench in our country right now. We do have a lot of good stuff going on here that all Americans should be celebrating. Unfortunately, we probably will not get to enjoy it because the local news media only parrot the rot coming liberal news media.
How important is it to you that liberals be blamed for eveyhting wrong in America?
Really.

Progressives have almost no power anywh anywhere and yet you still blame them foe problems.

Ita pretty sad

Hold dee doo daw day! I don't blame liberals for everything. The way we do business in this country I lay blame directly at the conservatives. Our health care problems I lay blame directly at the conservatives. Transportation woes I lay blame directly at the conservatives. Our not getting along well with other countries I lay blame directly at the conservatives (and liberals too).

And yes, the liberals don't have that much power now but when they did, they squandered it on idiotic problems like the LGBTQ+ community, wacky environmental guidelines, way-over-the-top abortion rights, aggressive corporate laws (I agree corporations get away with alot but the liberals approach the situation in such a socialistic way). They managed to make some changes while they had power that need to be reversed now. But the mainstream media still touts those unwanted positions so alot of people still have to push back against those unpopular positions such as abortion on demand, allowing trans rights, allowing illegal immigrants to enter the country whenever.

It would be nice to see the local news and more of the national news tell of the good progress that is happening here in the US. The news manage to find good news alot during the Biden Administration, I'm sure they could work up some positive stories for Trumps moves. They are not all bad moves on his part.

Walter Cronkite said long ago, "We don't run news stories about all the cats who DON'T get stuck in trees and have to be rescued by the Fire Department." News by its very nature is negative.

We now have a 24-hour news cycle with umpteen outlets competing for their respective target audiences. News is now a cut-throat business. Even when the story isn't actually negative, the grabber headline often is.

And, indeed, the world in general is a more crowded, angry, violent, fragmented place than it was 60, 40 or 20 years ago. The news to some extent just reflects this reality.

I really think the biggest factor is the 24-hour news cycle with media outlets that cater to specific target audiences who WANT to be ratcheted up and enraged by the dreaded "others" they oppose. Fox is a highly successful model for others to copy.

I like what Thoreau said more than 150 years ago: Once you understand the principle that ships sometimes sink, you don't need 100 news stories about ships sinking. Why is EVERY plane that crashes, even with three people on board, ALWAYS "breaking news"?
How very true that is about the news. Not to sound like a broken record but when Biden was in office our local news was always positive about the silliest things in the surrounding area. There were hardly any news of fires, robberies, killings only good Samaritan stories. Then Trump gets into office and I getting news about small airplanes crashing (this was when DOGE was going after the Federal workers such as air traffic controllers) in the state of Colorado or Texas or Alaska. Almost everyday was a story about airplanes crashing. Why? Never had stories like that before. Same goes for environment problems. They are a daily headline now. Or if they have a positive story, it's about a person that did something very courageous and kind (but they were an illegal alien).
