Do cancer stem cells actually exist in animals or humans?

Recently I've been listening to doctors talking about "alternative" cancer treatments, and the common theme they keep bringing up is this idea of cancerous stem cells.

I'm wondering if it is scientifically possible for these to exist. Wouldn't cancerous stem cells automatically be leukemia in humans since adult stem cells are stored in bone marrow and used to make blood?

References please, if you have any. :)

What do you mean "alternative cancer treatments"? Are we talking about experimental therapies or "special diets" and horse-dewormers?

Yes, they are real. A fairly basic intro can be found here after a very simple google search:

(Frankly, you could have guessed the page address sucessfully.)

No, one of my friends is hard up into resveratrol, turmeric, and apricot seeds and the "chemo is evil" train, and he's linking me to all of these online videos. I can't say I agree with his conspiracy theorist viewpoints. He seems to be allergic to mainstream reason, unlike myself.

Apricot seeds have cyanide in them, and chemo is the worse option? Uh huh.

I'm surprised. Apparently they decided to put a grain of truth in the middle of all their nonsense. I was expecting that to be disproven by hard science.

Oooh. Do what you can to pull them out. Those are not cancer treatments, so your friend has *untreated cancer*. Chemo is apparently brutal in many of its forms, and I do understand why late-stage patients with little hope that chemo will help some times choose to forgo treatment, but these other things are not treatments at all.

Cancer stem cells are real. These "alt" treatments are scams.

Fortunately for him, he doesn't have cancer - yet. My mom does, but she's going to chemotherapy like she's supposed to. His beliefs are not helpful.

I will try to convince him that he's wrong though. He needs to stop believing crazy stuff.

I'm not a duck, so I don't believe quacks.

(That was a joke, and this is the internet, so I don't think you're the quack, I think that the doctors in the videos are quacks.)
