In reference to the draconian security at the Brisbane G20, the reason was that the Newman state government didn't want a repeat of the massive protests at the London G20 in 2010 or the protests and riots in Toronto in 2011.

There were also some arson attacks when the 2017 Hamburg G20 was held, but that was after the Brisbane G20.

Effectively protests in the inner city were banned in Brisbane for the G20.

There wasn't much chance for intenational leaders to meet the locals as they were all outside the boundaries.

But Angela Merkel managed to shake a few hands in a popular night entertainment area.

One of the pub goers who met Ms Merkel said the leader did not rush to get inside and took time to greet the crowd.

"Her security detail was tight and we were told she doesn't usually greet people but she seemed in a really excited mood and happy to be in Brisbane so she took the time to meet the locals," she said.

"My friend from Germany was definitely star-struck and struggled to get the German words out.

I'm in Australia and there's not much use for Russian language speakers. We're too far away.
You should visit our parish. We have a lot of Russian speakers.
Actually, you have quite a few Russians living in Brisbane, judging by the number of Russian Orthodox Churches.

I don't know what the overall statistics are but a brief snapshot of the last census gave the following figures for people born in the Russian Federation who live in Greater Brisbane.

There were 2266 people, of which only about a third are male.

There were about 2.5 million people in Greater Brisbane in 2021 which includes four other local government areas beside Brisbane itself - Logan City, Ipswich, Moreton Bay and Redlands City.

Russian born people comprise less than one tenth of one percent of the population or about one in a thousand.

Teach new languages to people.

Communication stops wars.
What are you talking about? All of Russia's victims can speak Russian, certainly at the governmental level, but for Ukraine, a large chunk of the population. Please try to understand what you are talking about or get better talking points from Moscow Central.

Most European countries and most of the United States,
don’t know any Russian words.

Ukraine does. Stick with what is relevant to the war itself. This isn't about the lack of Russian knowledge in Peoria. (Or in Pokrovsk which Russia is about to destroy in their pursuit of conquest.)

Is it good when people learn new languages?
What was the last new language you learned and what new language are you learning now??

(I've thrown in a second question mark because of your affection for them.)

Are you afraid to teach the Russian language in western schools?

Are you afraid of the Russian alphabet because It’s different?
Russian has over 1000 words for ‘invade’ but no word for ‘peace’.

I lived in ND for years. The descendants of Russian immigrants are some of the nicest people I have met. I am not sure why anyone would be afraid of the Russian language.
My sister in law is Russian. We get on like a civilian’s house on fire.

The United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

They don’t have many people who can speak both
Russian and their native language.
I’ve just said my sister in law is Russian! My niece speaks Russian despite being English. You really need to get your facts straight.

Russia is afraid of NATO.

NATO is afraid of Russia.
That’s because Russia is a paranoid authoritarian oligarchy who keeps invading other countries.

NATO provides protection from invasion so Russia hates it.
