I'm 1/2 Russian, I'd love to learn it, just don't have the time to.

My university offers a four-course sequence in Russian, so they don't seem to be afraid.

Any language that uses a non-Latin alphabet is going to be a little more difficult for native English speakers to learn. But there's some similarity between Cyrillic and Greek, so that makes Cyrillic a little easier.

I am not a teacher, but I feel like all languages, such as Russian, Hebrew and Arabic should be allowed in school. The politicians/wars do not define the entire country. I know two Russians who live in the US, and both have spoken out against the Kremlin. So, in sum, Russian should be allowed as a language class, but not mandatory.

I lived in ND for years. The descendants of Russian immigrants are some of the nicest people I have met. I am not sure why anyone would be afraid of the Russian language.

So, what is your other half, my friend? For me, I am not Russian, but mostly Romani ancestry (which originated when the Punjabi people migrated from India to Europe centuries ago). Also, nice to meet a fellow sci-fi fellow here. Doctor Who is good, though Disney ruined the new ones in 2023-2024.

There's nothing to stop Russian being taught in UK schools, it's possible to get qualifications in it, as with many other languages. I think our schools just deem languages such as French and Spanish both easier and more useful to the average British youngster.

At least teach high schoolers the Russian alphabet.

Yes, if I knew Russian, I would teach the Cyrillic (Russian alphabet) in high school, if I was a language teacher, and knew Cyrillic. Same if I knew Arabic, then I would teach the Arabic alphabet in high school. Languages are typically independent of geopolitics, unless the language was forced as a mandatory requirement on students.

A nice idea. If only things were so simple.

Many Ukrainians have Russian as a first language. Many are bilingual advanced Russian speakers. Most Ukrainians know the Russian alphabet.

They don’t have many people who can speak both

Seriously. How is this relevant?

The war isn't between the US and Russia or France and Russia or the UK and Ukraine.

There is no linguistic barrier between Russia and Ukraine. It has no bearing on the start of this war, nor its continuation.

Why is this so hard for you to understand?
