Can we discuss the theology that Jesus hideously tortures souls without respite forever and ever?

First some scripture that speaks to this doctrine.

Matthew 25:41

King James Version

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Matthew 25:46

King James Version

46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Revelation 20:10

King James Version

10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Question. What is the purpose of Jesus torturing people without end?

in response, I will simply offer one Scripture:

Job 40:8 NKJV
“Would you indeed annul My judgment? Would you condemn Me that you may be justified?

Again, what is the PURPOSE of forever torture?

Do you not trust God in His administration of justice? Is it not enough to know that God is the one determining such things? Why must you know the purpose as if you are fit to judge God's machinations?

I truly believe no one can give you a satisfactory answer because we frankly just don't know! What we do know is we should heed to His warnings rather than relentlessly questioning His purpose.

All justice necessarily requires payment/penalty for injustice (law breaking).

God is first of all just. . .all his attributes are in accordance with his justice. . .which is why the penalty for man's sin had to be paid on the cross before man could be reconciled to God and received by him.

So we agree that there is no purpose in Jesus torturing people forever.

Jesus suffered and died to prevent people from being tortured forever.
Sin has to be punished and, since the garden of Eden, all of us are born in sin (and it's downhill after that).
Jesus took on Himself the punishment that we deserved to set us free from eternal torment.

Healthy eyes can look upon bright light without any suffering while diseased eyes experience pain and distress.
For those who are raised in Christ on the last day, the experience of God's presence is bliss. For those who are raised on the last day as enemies of God, His presence will be experienced as pain and suffering.
God's presence is the same. God is not punishing the unrepentant, they simply experience God's holiness and love very differently to those who are in Christ.

Hello Beth, I don't believe anyone is saying that 1. God "tortures" unbelievers in Hell/the Lake of Fire (they will experience torment, however) or 2. that He acts w/o purpose when He sends unbelievers there.

We do not know everything (there are mysteries that we cannot fully explain in the Bible, as I know you know .. e.g. Deuteronomy 29:29), but God makes sure that we know all that we need to know. In this case, the reason I believe that Hell/the Lake of Fire is eternal (for all who end up there) is because they are incapable of paying the price that is needed to redeem themselves and be forgiven (this is a price that must be paid for us by our Redeemer, the Lord Jesus/the spotless Lamb of God, as He is the only One who can).

God bless you!!

--David
p.s. - here are several verses/passages as additional thoughts about this.

Romans 5
8 God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
2 Corinthians 5
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Hebrews 9
22 All things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Hebrews 10
4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Hello Beth

So God wants Jesus to save all but Jesus is incapable of doing so and so God doesn't get what he wants in spite of what he said in Isaiah.

1 Timothy 2:3-4
This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

2 Peter 3:9 esv
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Isaiah 46:10
declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.

Isaiah 55:11
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

Traditional Theology -- A forum dedicated to the respectful discussion of traditional, historic theology; liturgical practices, doctrines, dogmatics; Holy Scripture as found in the various canons of the Church; Church History; classic confessions of the faith, etc.

Definition of Traditional Christianity:

Traditional Christians hold to the traditional beliefs and customs of the early church that Jesus Christ established and believe they should be acknowledged and used in the development of the Church today. Traditional Christians believe that the Church and associated Tradition - especially from the Apostolic / early Church - guide us even today. These traditions include sources such as church councils and creeds, writings of the early Church Fathers, testimony of the Lives of the Saints, classic confessions of the faith, etc. Many traditional Christians believe that each Christian is involved in a movement toward God, commonly known as theosis or sanctification. Traditional Christians recognize a variety of sacraments and sacramental acts including, but not limited to; Baptism, Holy Communion (Eucharist), Confession and Absolution, Chrismation (confirmation) etc., and consider them to be additional means whereby God imparts His grace on those who have faith.

Example denominations include, but are not limited to, the Eastern Orthodox Churches, Oriental Orthodox Churches, the Roman Catholic Church, Anglicans, Assyrian Church of the East, etc.
