Chuck Schumer of all people is questioning "receiving gifts from a foreign entity that could influence decision making"?

I assume he's planning on promptly returning the millions of dollars he's received over the years from AIPAC and NORPAC then?

Those campaign contributions are "free speech" per the Supreme Court so long as those are American organizations.

I dont blame anyone for playing by the rules of the game as they currently exist, even though I resent some of those rules - or lack of. I do note that its generally been the R party who has endeavored to maximally open up legal campaign spending and contributions.

As for the 747, its not a personal gift to Trump.... its a donation to the country as whole, right? Even if so, I really dislike the precedent, especially from regimes who are so oppositional to many values we're (supposed to) hold. Lets limit this sort of thing to zoo pandas and similar.

It is a personal gift. The "country" is Donald Trump....(at least in his mind).

That's quite a naive position. A bribe is an inducement to the person receiving it to treat the person offering it in a beneficial manner. What that might be doesn't need to be expressly specified at that time. But it obviously taints any future dealings. And that is the problem here. You must not just act honestly. You just be seen to act honestly.

Yeah, this is Trump we are talking about, where those terms don't seem to apply. But apply they must.
My initial comment gave the justification offered by Bondi. However, after thinking on this for a day, I decided she was full of herself. The only reason Trump appointed her was due to her great brown nosing. Why usually the Attorney General would be THE source to listen to for this sort of thing, I think in her case she is completely unreliable. She will simply say what Trump wants to hear.

Yes, I think it is a bribe. And so did the authors of the Constitution:

Article I, Section 9, Clause 8 of the Constitution:
“And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.”

Let’s not be naive children here. No one gives a $400 million gift without expecting something in return. We have proof of a very expensive gift to a very easily corruptible man. That’s more than enough cause for concern.
I agree. I was originally quoting Bondi. But the more I thought about it, the more obvious it became that her response could not be trusted. She was appointed Attorney General because she would kiss Trump's tuchas. She basically is going to say whatever she thinks Trump wants.

So yes, I agree it was a bribe. And accepting gifts from foreign countries is also forbidden by the Constitution.

Bondi was the Florida AG who stopped investigating Trump University after he donated to her campaign.

....and Bondi worked for a lobbyist...

Bondi said Ballard Partners — not she personally — received $115,000 per month for their lobby work for Qatar. Department of Justice documents corroborated that statement.

But yea, she claims receiving a 400 million dollar gift is not a violation of the US Constitution. One hardly needs any legal training to understand how compromised she is....

Article I, Section 9, Clause 8: No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.

But that is now the Unites States we live in. We elected him and condone this corruption.

So the new air force one will belong to not to the office of president but to Donald Trump. A bribe pure and simple.
More liberal nonsense and propaganda. The plane is NOT the personal property of Trump it now property of the Department of Defense. It is absolute foolishness to claim Trump accepted the gift for personal ownership and use. Liberals will end up with egg on their faces when the dust settles on this . Just like the egg on their faces by liberals crying over the stock market.

Correct.
it now property of the Department of Defense.
It would be, temporarily. Then it would pass to the Trump Presidential Library Foundation.
It is absolute foolishness to claim Trump accepted the gift for personal ownership and use.
Why? Is there any rule that says he can't make use of property held by his Library?

I don't see how. This either ends up as a useless monument to Trump's pride or an expensive, wasteful boondoggle that never sees service. You do realize that it will take longer and cost more money to convert this plane to AF1 standards than it will to complete the new AF1 aircraft already under construction, right? It would need to be stripped down to a bare shell, checked for security (i.e. listening devices) and structural issues, then all of the various upgrades and equipment would need to be purchased and installed. Boeing is undertaking the VC-25B project on a fixed price contract - meaning that they're bearing the burden of all cost overruns. While it was an expensive contract, the money is already paid out, and they anticipate being done in the next few years. It's likely to take at least that long to build out the Qatari 747, and it'll cost even more money, because all of the equipment and systems will need to be purchased again, at today's prices rather than prices from a decade ago.

The problem of powerful people accepting gifts is that influence, favoritism and some form of reciprocation is expected somewhere down the line.

No one understands transactional relationships better than Donald Trump.

Gifts are frequently given to this government by other governments and sometimes Presidents and or wives steal time on their way out.
