Today, April 25, marks 7 years since my wife died. Here she is about 4 months pregnant at my diaconal ordination, which is also near this time (April 28).

I have a meeting with an Anglican chaplain in the Ohio National Guard shortly. I found out about this guy from an article he wrote for the "North American Anglican." Turns out, he lives 1 county over from me (25 miles maybe). Anyhow, we are going to the famous Tom's Ice Cream Bowl, which has been awarded #1 parlor in Ohio 2 years in a row recently. Neutral territory, I suppose. Who can disagree over fresh churned ice cream?

I have found ice cream to be an indispensable parenting tool. ;)

I'm at my diocese's annual clergy conference. We have Bishop Kevin Nichols to lead several sessions on "Reclaiming the Psalms in Harrowing Times." I'm looking forward to his first address shortly.

Today marks the 15th anniversary of confirmation in The Episcopal Church, now 21 years since I began attending there. (Yes, I was slow to admit I was one of their's now and I wasn't going back.)

And, yet, on many days I still feel like the new kid in school.

I just discovered that two friends from church, who are both significantly older than me (I am fifty-something), cannot swim! I intend to solve this travesty against humanity on Wednesday, when we are all free to go to a local pool to get it sorted out. We are on the coast, the beach is lifeguarded all summer, we have 4 excellent council swimming pools, how do people end up not mentioning these things to anyone?

Never mind, they have managed to tell me now.

About a third of recruits to the US Navy are unable to swim when they report for basic training. They are sent for swim instruction 3 times a week until they are able to pass the basic swim test or wash out of training.

In Australia, it's very unusual to not be able to swim at all. We're all taught at least basics in school. The only people I've known who haven't been able to swim at all were recent migrants from places without such a swimming culture.

In the USA I am not so surprised, because you have a lot of people living a long way inland, and a huge variety of climates and lifestyles going on. There are corners of even this island I am on where swimming is not a readily accessible activity, but this city is not one of them. I suspect shame prevented these two from getting help before, and I believe shame can go jump in a lake of fire and brimstone.

I hope I am a bit more gentle with my friends than the US Navy trainers are with their recruits.

This I knew, and it shows at every Olympics. Can you all get into the sea all year round?

Well... for those who live near the sea (which is most of the population), you can. But in winter it's not very comfortable, at least not in the more southern areas where I've lived.

These days I live a good five hours' drive from a beach, and I do miss it.

Eeeek, but you can sit on a veranda at 11:00pm on Christmas Day, which nobody does here.

True. But I could do that living by the beach, too. ;)

One parish I worked in, the church (and house) were on a short street; at one end was the gourmet chocolate shop, and at the other end was the beach. I figured God had arranged that just about perfectly.
