Why unilateral tradewars in a global market are dumb, episode 47

Subaru Canada to source more vehicles from Japan, not U.S.

Vehicles made in Canada and sold here obviously aren’t subject to tariffs, but unlike rival Japanese brands Toyota and Honda, Subaru doesn’t have any Canadian manufacturing facilities.

There will be shifts in vehicle production between Subaru’s plants in Japan and the United States for the 2026 model year; and because of this, Kubota expects that Canada’s imports from the U.S. may be reduced from 26% to just 10%. The difference will come from Subaru’s plants in Japan; those cars won’t face tariffs due to Canada’s free-trade agreement with that country.

Temu customers in the U.S. hit with steep import charges due to tariffs

A three-pack of men's athletic shorts advertised as on sale for $23.61 with free shipping came out to $56.36 after a $32.75 import charge, according to an NBC News review of product listings.

Both Shein and Temu had issued notices to customers on their websites saying price adjustments would start April 25 “due to recent changes in global trade rules and tariffs” that have raised operating expenses.

Another X user joked: "Temu needs to put a 'Trump did This' sticker next to the new import charges line at checkout."

Unlike earlier uses of such stickers to claim the price of gas or eggs or other things went up or down, this time there is only one person responsible and it is the one looking directly at the Sun.

Sensitive topic apparently! How dare Amazon provide price (tariff) transparency to its customers! (Bezo's reportedly killed the idea after a Trump conversation).

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, on Tuesday accused the online retail giant of being “hostile and political,” citing a report — disputed by Amazon — from Punchbowl News saying that the company would start displaying the exact cost of tariff-related price increases alongside its products.

Ms. Leavitt said it was “not a surprise” coming from Amazon, as she held up a copy of a 2021 article from Reuters with the headline, “Amazon partnered with China propaganda arm.”

Hey now, is that any way to treat a major contributor to your bosses inaugaration party?

Tariffs-related stockpiling boosts US goods trade deficit to record high

No need to panic. This is clearly temporary. US businesses bought a little extra so that they will have enough product until all the new US factories sprout up next month.

The report from the Commerce Department's Census Bureau prompted economists to sharply downgrade their GDP estimates for last quarter to show a steeper decline rather than growth just stalling. Goldman Sachs now sees GDP contracting at a 0.8% annualized rate while JPMorgan forecasts output declining at a 1.75% pace.

A glorious (but temporary) decline of US growth!

The economy grew at a 2.4% rate in the fourth quarter.

Booo! Joe Biden did that!

I remember some businesses putting surcharges on bills during Biden's presidency to protest inflation and minimum wage increases. I guess Republicans don't like the shoe on the other foot.

Schumer says Democrats will force Senate floor vote on Trump tariffs

The harder fight — and one in which Schumer has no control — is in the U.S. House, where a majority of lawmakers would have to approve the resolution for it to become binding.

A similar resolution sponsored this month by U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, wound up passing the Senate after four Republicans crossed party lines to support it. Schumer is trying to repeat that result.

White House threatens to veto Senate measure nixing Trump’s global tariffs

The Senate is expected to force a vote this week on the resolution.

Canadian Dealers Want To Blow Up Border Rules And Import Cool Cars Americans Can’t Buy

The ripple effects of U.S. trade policies are about to wash over the auto market, and now the Canadian Automotive Dealers Association (CADA) is floating some bold, if unconventional, ideas to soften the blow.

Chief among them? Changing the rules of the game altogether by opening the doors to cars from Europe, Japan, and Korea, vehicles currently locked out by Canada’s alignment with U.S. regulations.

Removing regulatory red tape and increasing free trade! A conservative's dream!

A bipartisan measure to undo Trump's global tariffs fails in the Senate

The resolution to rein in Trump's tariff authority stalled on a 49-49 tie, with two senators missing the vote.

Sens. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., who voiced support for the measure, were absent for the vote. It needed a simple majority to pass.

In a 51-48 vote in early April, the Senate approved a similar but more limited resolution that aimed to block the U.S. tariffs on Canada. The same three Republicans who joined with Democrats Wednesday, along with McConnell, voted for that measure, too, offering a rare rebuke of Trump.

US has approached China seeking talks on Trump tariffs, says state social media

The US has approached China seeking talks over Donald Trump’s 145% tariffs, a social media account affiliated with Chinese state media has said, potentially signalling Beijing’s openness to negotiations.

“The US has proactively reached out to China through multiple channels, hoping to hold discussions on the tariff issue,” Yuyuan Tantian reported in a post published on its official Weibo social media account, citing anonymous sources.

Wyze Labs, a Kirkland, Wash.-based maker of popular smart home devices, went viral this week after posting about the impact of new tariffs on its hardware business.

The company said it paid $255,000 in tariffs after importing $167,000 worth of floodlight inventory — and shared the actual customs document to prove it.

Trump announces 100% tariffs on movies made overseas, surprising studios

“I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands,” Trump said late Sunday in a post on his Truth Social platform. “WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”

But studio executives on Sunday were surprised by the announcement, saying they had no advance notice of the tariffs plan and didn’t know the details of how it would be applied.

Movie executives reached Sunday privately wondered how a tariff would be imposed on a film, which, like a car, has components made in different countries while post-production often occurs in the U.S.

--

This really is a bit of a head scratcher. At least as a tariff. Particularly in an age of digital filmmaking, no 'thing' may actually be 'imported' from overseas. And even if it were, what's the value of two-thirds of a reel of exposed undeveloped film?

Instituted as some sort of tax on distributors/theaters would be more practical, but it really does seem hard to work out.

Anyway, are we going to see interesting remakes like Death on the Willamette or Lawrence of Alabama?

All of that said, I'm sure California would welcome more domestic productions, but the studios probably less so.

I think former Home Alone 2: Lost in New York star Donald Trump is upset he doesn't get as many acting roles as he used to.

Americans want products "Made in America" but won't pay more for it......imagine that?
