  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Here ya go, folks. It’s happened:

Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez, a 20-year-old U.S. citizen, was being held in the Leon County Jail Thursday, charged with illegally entering Florida as an “unauthorized alien” — even as a supporter waved his U.S. birth certificate in court.

The article goes on to state that he’s being held per the request of ICE and that the initial request was made under a law that a federal judge has temporarily barred the state from enforcing.

I wonder how many red flags it’s going to take.

An official with Homeland Security Investigations in Tallahassee took Lopez-Gomez, a 20-year-old born in Georgia, to a Wendy’s near the jail

Free Frosty Swirl for bona fide citizens detained erroneously.

This kind of racial profiling was bound to happen.

When certain folks don't show up at church, I now have to seriously wonder if they weren't detained by ICE and disappeared.

Update:

He's been released.
The point, though, is that a citizen of the United States of America, was detained/arrested for not having “his papers” in order.

That’s not good!

* I do have issues with Trump, despite being a moderate conservative. He’s far, far from perfect. Just so I’m abundantly clear.

"The arrest record the trooper filed states that Lopez-Gomez had said he was in the country illegally". Hmm
Considering that the man has a valid birth certificate and the government is eagerly trying to deport every person in the country illegally that it thinks it can reasonably get away with to an El Salvadorean gulag, that seems unlikely. If we're being charitable, the reasonable conclusion is that the trooper misheard - "illegal" and "legal" can sound very similar to someone who is expecting to hear one or the other, especially if said with an accent and/or by someone who is flustered.

If we're being uncharitable, it's well-known that police officers lie on arrest records from time to time. Considering that this guy was trying to enforce a law that the courts had struck down, his grasp of ethics and legal principles are already in question.

In some communities, police have been lobbying for just such a law. They feel limited by not being able to demand papers from anyone they wish to check.

....yes, for a brief time in 2011, we saw what happens when law enforcement is empowered to do immigration enforcement (Sheriff Joe's deputies profiling people leaving a hispanic grocery store).
