U.S. senator introduces legislation to make Easter Monday a federal holiday

Amen to that!!!

Most Protestants do not recognize Easter Monday as a holiday.

Growing up as a Methodist, of German Brethren heritage, at a time when academic gowns were still the norm for Protestant ministers, Easter was a holiday, but it wasn't something that required a great deal of investment. Usually, people celebrated it privately a home with a small number of family members. We also didn't commemorate Good Friday or Ash Wednesday. Maundy Thursday was observed, however.

Since then, there has been more of a move to have Good Friday commemorations, but it still isn't something that is universal.

So I am puzzled why there is the perception that Easter Monday is so important. Easter has never rivalled Christmas among Protestants in the modern period, in terms of investment of time, money, or other resources. It is a holy day, but it simply doesn't involve the kinds of festivities, or family get-togethers, associated with Christmas and Thanksgiving.

In Washington state Friday the day after Thanksgiving is a holiday.

In a thread of posts on X, Schmitt explained why the day should be federally recognized, starting with the fact that “81% of Americans celebrate Easter.”

“But,” he continued, “our current holiday schedule makes it way too difficult for families to celebrate together.”

When I was working, the only two days that I refused to work on were Easter and Christmas. I welcome this legislation.
