• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"since it was more secure than the government-provided server"

no it wasn't. You have absolutely zero proof or technical expertise to even make that statement.
That was the whole reason Powell recommended it. It was never hacked, which is proof enough.

The Signal chat was hacked right and left, because their phones were copied when they traveled to foreign countries. They should have used burners, but no.

Not when the ruler holds a clear mandate from an overwhelming majority of Americans.
Biden's not in office anymore. Obama is not in office anymore. They won big but Trump has never received 50% of the vote, so he can't be who you're talking about.

Very well, I shall send a telegram to my solicitor and have him stop the litigation. I shall expect a response from him within a fortnight.

I have the honor to be your most obedient servant.

well he may not have to report to anyone at the Atlantic

but the issue here is: was it ethical or even legal for him to stay in a Signal chat room to which he was "accidentally" invited (if that is indeed what happened) and then to screen cap sensitive, or even classified, information, and store it on an unmonitored, unregulated device--for a month?

he basically went full-cowboy on this to get a scoop --which he did.

and made a national security problem a much bigger problem, or potentially a disaster, had his phone been compromised, left in an airport, or the screen caps viewed by a malicious party

and these are just some of the issues regarding this whole thing. Now people are speculating that this goes much deeper:

Journalist has the biggest National Security faux-pas story fall into his lap, (was he unethical in how he obtained it!?).
Pfft.

I work in IT security

email, by its every nature, it not "secure", especially MS Exchange servers you stick in your basement, that are not centrally managed, properly patched, monitored, or expertly maintained. No company is going too let you put your own home-brew server in your basement because you don't feel like using the established servers

we don't know if her server was "hacked" or compromised

"her server was more secure"! is an absurd statement not backed up by any facts or evidence

He had been assured by several credentialed people testifying under oath that nothing in the chat was classified, top intelligence people who really should know as they were in said chat. As for staying, he is a journalist; he was invited by a principal; he didn't think it was real at first.

What is unethical about exposing an egregious security lapse - well after the disclosure could have affected the operation?

General Powell's reputation as a good and loyal Republican has changed since then.

So what makes you think that her server was not properly patched, monitored and maintained? IT was not her grandkids fiddling around in the basement.

The probability that Clinton's server was hacked seems increasingly unlikely the more years that go by with nary a single hacked email surfacing, while we know that the State Department's was hacked because they announced it.

“Let’s share this timely, vital and highly sensitive information with the Americans!”—No other nations, anymore.

...this is where the real damage to US national security will occur. No nation will risk their sources to share intel with the US.

And I suspect senior US military leaders will think twice when it comes to briefing the Secretary of Defense and his cadre in the Pentagon.

I don't buy it

Alex Wong is a Harvard grad and not some dope.
I'll take your word on his alma mater, but it doesn't preclude him being a dope.
Waltz and all the others are trained and briefed in national security and have to follow protocols (although some may have been broken here)
And yet they were using a commercial app (likely on personal phones) for sensitive discussions.
the whole "well everyone is just stupid, nothing to see here, let's move on" position amounts to putting your head in the sand.
We shouldn't stop looking. What else are they discussing on unsecure devices/apps?
