U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was forced to backtrack on a false claim he made about Panama allowing American ships to transit its canal for free.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of State had issued a statement announcing that Panama had “agreed to no longer charge fees for U.S. government vessels to transit the Panama Canal.” However, Panama’s president, José Raúl Mulino, swiftly accused Rubio of spreading “lies and falsehoods,” condemning the statement as “simply and plainly intolerable.”

By Friday, Rubio had changed his stance, admitting the U.S. had only “expectations” that Panama would stop charging for canal use, not a confirmed agreement. “Those are our expectations. They were clear."

You may have a point there. I think Democrats were depending on President Biden beating Trump again, but when it was clear that probably wasn't going to happen, they relied on Harris as a last gasp backup plan. While I, and many, had no problem voting for her, enough did and we're stuck with Trump 2.0, now armed with newly defined Predidential immunity for any further future crimes.

I just hope we survive, and the Democrats find leadership in the interim.

Assuming that there will be a plate to step up to, I would like to see both sides field a canidate who is not able to collect social security for 10 or so years.

Greenland condemns planned visits by Usha Vance and Trump adviser​

Greenland's politicians have condemned plans for high-profile US visits, in the wake of President Donald Trump's threats to take over the island.

Second Lady Usha Vance will make a cultural visit this week, and a separate trip is expected from Trump's National Security Adviser Mike Waltz.

Outgoing PM Egede described Waltz's visit in particular as a provocation. "What is the security advisor doing in Greenland? The only purpose is to show a demonstration of power to us," he told Sermitsiaq newspaper.

Speaking to the same paper, Greenland's probable next PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen accused the American officials of showing the local population a lack of respect.

According to recent polls, almost 80% of Greenlanders back independence from Denmark. But an opinion survey in January suggested an even greater number rejected the idea of becoming part of the US.

In the face of opposition, the charm offensive has been scaled back.

Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, said the report “worries me greatly because we do not spy on friends.”

U.S. officials have ordered spy agencies to ramp up efforts to gather intelligence on Greenland, according to two sources with knowledge of the matter, in a sign President Donald Trump apparently remains focused on acquiring the island.

The directive was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

“The Wall Street Journal should be ashamed of aiding deep state actors who seek to undermine the President by politicizing and leaking classified information,” the statement [from Tulsi Gabbard] said. “They are breaking the law and undermining our nation’s security and democracy. Those who leak classified information will be found and held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
