  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Executive order Thursday to close the Education Department,

I don't know mush about it but it seem that a national strategy might have been a good thing. And also a help to the poorer states.

When you look at the current test scores, the Department of Education couldn't have failed more if they tried. They deserve to be closed. Might as well try something different by sending it back to the states, things couldn't get much worse.
What exactly is going to be sent back to the states?

The duties of the Department of Education. Below is an article about what they do. I hear the funding will be sent directly to the states now. I also heard the states will work together to build some sort of standardized curriculum requirements. That could be tricky. I would think the states would mostly fix their own curriculum standards.

What is the US Department of Education and what does it do?.

I'm aware of what the ED does. However it she's seen like you aren't since you brought up curriculum which is now and always has been the province of the states. The role of ED is to give money and administer certain civil rights laws. Those things have nothing to do with test scores.

Fair enough, but their mission statement literally talks about promoting student achievement, which would be measured by test scores:

"Despite the growth of the Federal role in education, the Department never strayed far from what would become its official mission: to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access."

Obviously they have failed in this.

Since Trump gutted the part of the ED that compiles statistics to evaluate how different states are doing (the IES) we probably won’t need to worry so much about pesky test scores anymore.

I am guessing some states will go the way of Oklahoma that hated their national test scores so lowered standards in their own local test to make it look like they aren’t doing as poorly.

I don’t think we will do that here in MA.

If there were worried about them before it didn't seem to have helped any. Test scores have plummeted during the DoE's existence.

And the kids won't be any worse off than they were. The DoE sure wasn't educating anyone. I think actually educating young'uns was a threat to "equity".

There's no longer anyone to force yu, and if y'all do a got job, other states will take note, and possibly even follow suit.
