  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just started and am still in chapter 2.
I read it 50 years ago in high school. But more recently read "The Brothers Karamazov" and "The Idiot" and loved them so I figured why not.

Anyone care to read along with me? Got to love those names.

So Rodion Raskolnikov is getting the most self degrading history from Semyon Marmeladov. It all seems so dark and depressing. I wonder who the inspiring people will be. There have got to be a few.

Great choices. I've read all three. I think the one you're reading is best.

Really? I am glad to hear that. You know the Russian made mini series with them. You can find them on youtube. They kind of help me better to visualize.

I haven't seen it but I'll look for them. Fall is the perfect time for Russian literature. Tolstoy's an obvious choice but so is Ivan Turgenev (Fathers and Sons; Spring Torrents) and Mikhail Lermontov (A Hero of Our Time). You may like Pushkin's Eugene Onegin but I gave it 3 stars.

I think Kafka would be a nice fit as well. The Trial and The Castle are good.

I am still plugging away. Katerina Ivanovna Mermeladov hurled a pretty wicked insult , "You trashy Prussian hen's leg in crinoline!"

Wow! It was pretty intense at her husbands funeral banquet.
