  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says she will reject the extradition request by Louisiana for a New York doctor charged with illegally providing abortion drugs to a mother who gave them to her minor daughter who reportedly wanted to have the baby.

Hochul’s declaration follows a grand jury in West Baton Rouge Parish’s indictment on Jan. 31 of Margaret Carpenter and her company, Nightingale Medical, PC. The jury also indicted the Louisiana mother, and the three parties were charged with criminal abortion by means of abortion-inducing drugs, which is a felony.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry signed the extradition warrant on Feb. 11 for Carpenter at the request of the state’s Attorney General Liz Murrill and District Attorney Tony Clayton.

So, there are two things here.

1) The New York physician prescribed a drug that is legal in New York. I don't think Louisiana has jurisdiction over what doctors in New York do. This is an interstate matter that will probably end up in the lap of the Supreme Court.

2) If the mother coerced her daughter into terminating her pregnancy, but the daughter wanted to continue the pregnancy, then that's pretty horrific. Even if one is pro-choice, THAT IS NOT CHOICE. If coercion was involved (details on the story are still coming out), then definitely prosecute mom.

While drugging your own daughter seems ghastly and extreme, I don't believe a minor child is competent enough to decide to become a parent. So this is a difficult case and I would hope the mother receives clemency.
