  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As California closes prisons, the cost of locking someone up hits new record at $132,860

January 23, 2024

The cost of imprisoning one person in California has increased by more than 90% in the past decade, reaching a record-breaking $132,860 annually, according to state finance documents.

That’s nearly twice as expensive as the annual undergraduate tuition — $66,640 — at the University of Southern California, the most costly private university in the state.

What is the point of this post? It simply states that California, along with several states with higher than average cost of living, spend more. Additionally. California offers many programs including education, healthcare and rehabilitation as well as humane prison conditions all of which cost more money.
Now we can look at the other end of the spectrum.

Please inform yourself.

"In 2020, the number of deaths in American prisons increased to 6,182, up from 4,240 in 2019, even as the prison population decreased. Some states with high mortality rates in 2020 had a history of high prison deaths, including: Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, and West Virginia. "

  • Factors that contribute to high prison mortality rates include: long sentences, harsh conditions, poor public health, lack of testing, lack of mental care and lack of rehabilitation programs

well ... that's not really a fair comparison ..... the prison system is responsible, for food, housing and medical concerns and other miscellaneous needs and those aspects are not included in tuitions ... those in the prison are totally dependent on the prison system ... whereas in higher education system they are not.

IMO, it doesn't make any sense to spend more money per year on average for a prisoner than the amount of money to pay for a free person in the USA to live a decent life.
