  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes, people have claimed otherwise

When the story first came out, the MSM and Oprah herself basically said there was no compensation at all.

Then the documents from the Federal Elections Commission came out, showing the payments to Harpo

so the story changed to the one you are now promoting: that somehow a payment to Oprah's closely-held company does not amount to a payment to Oprah. That there is some kind of difference

which is complete nonsense: a payment to Harpo is a payment to Oprah

it would have been fine if Oprah and the Harris campaign simply came out and said "yes, we paid Oprah's company 1 million to coordinate and run a big media event". Instead, they lied about the whole thing

this is why people don't trust the MSM
Oprah wasn't paid a performer's compensation for the appearance, but it's unreasonable to think (without more specific information) that she doesn't get a corporate dividend from Harpo.

correct

the weird thing is, she tried to claim that she received no compensation whatsoever, and Harpo also suggested that no money exchanged hands

they then started changing their story, with Harpo saying they received payment for staging the event. They then said it was for more general "production costs"

It doesn't cost 1 million bucks to put on a show with a live audience for 2 hours on a set that has already been built, equipment already purchased, etc. The cost was to pay Oprah and other celebrities to show up. The show also collects hefty advertising fees

this gets into the reasons why Harris lost the election: this condescending attitude towards the electorate, the inability to be straightforward or truthful, and the constant gaslighting

As I said earlier, the production shouldn't have been more than $50,000, even if they had to build the set (which was an exceedingly simple set...there are YouTubers with more elaborate sets).

Baptists, especially in the northern US or in places like Canada or England, are theologically diverse, and not all are religious fundamentalists, unlike Southern Baptists in the US. Most Baptists outside the American South are committed to religious freedom and democratic norms as intrinsic parts of their religious identity, for instance.
Hello FireDragon. Yes, that's true. But I think Oprah's views are so far outside the Baptist mainstream as to be questionable to many. Celebrity endorsements might be a two edged sword that can cut the wielder, if not used carefully. God Bless :)

Oprah is a laywoman, not a minister. I wouldn't expect all her beliefs to be rigidly orthodox, as material heresy is fairly common in any denomination among laity.

Oprah's faith is basically new-age, heretical nonsense...

If that's your criteria for declaring somebody a non-Christian, you'ld have to discount a great many Pentecostals as well. Or is it just because Oprah's politics don't line up with most white Evangelical Christians?

Evidence please.
I will be happy to dig that up after you show me evidence Oprah was not compensated either directly, or through her company, for the campaign event

because I already produced the official report above, consisting of 2 500k payments.

you are the guy trying to say Oprah didn't get anything out of this, despite that material evidence, and reports to the contrary.

don't go put the burden of proof on me lol --it is squarely on you

This is just the dumbest thing to get worked up about.
I don't think anyone's worked up. It's just kind of fascinating, like watching a trainwreck where a train of hypocrisy collides into a train of stupidity.

I only entered this thread about a non-event when you started accusing the media of lying in post #5.

You have made some specific claims, the first of which was before I arrived:

The MSM is trying to claim this didn't happen. Oprah denies she was paid.
When the story first came out, the MSM and Oprah herself basically said there was no compensation at all.
Harpo also suggested that no money exchanged hands

I don't know. From her own mouth, she sounds like a very mainline Protestant to me...although she is very wealthy. She is no theologian, so I'm not going to criticize her on that....

This is still news, I guess?

Unsurprisingly, Oprah is very liberal (not that there is anything wrong with that) and supported the Democratic Party.

She's definitely entitled to her own views, just like anyone else.

Eh? Growing up in the 2000s, I thought a lot of people had respect for Oprah, since she was everywhere and so huge. It was a big deal when a lady from my hometown appeared on her show for being a pack rat. Oprah was literally EVERYWHERE.

Now, I'm going off topic, and I'm just rambling...

You're probably right though ;)

You have made some specific claims, the first of which was before I arrived:
Snopes claimed the story that Oprah received any compensation was a "lie" promoted by social media

and this:

"In a video published on TMZ.com on Nov. 11, an unidentified videographer for the Backgrid celebrity news agency asked Winfrey, "Is it true that they paid you $1 million for the endorsement for Kamala?" Winfrey answered, "Not true." She added, "I was paid nothing, ever."

She WAS paid 1 million through her company, and unless we see an itemized list on how help with a live streaming event (cameras, etc) amounts to 1 million bucks, we have to assume that the money involved was compensation for Oprah herself, through her private, closely-held company

Aljezeera, hardly a right-wing outfit, called Oprah's claim she wasn't paid "semantics" and concluded she had been paid

again, this is an example of distortion and disinformation by the MSM
