  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Guardian angels, how many do you have?

Scripture does not say. And obviously, it is not a major part of any tradition of Christianity. Therefore, this is speculation and nothing more, so not worth sinking time into.
[Verse 1:]
When at night I go to sleep
Fourteen angels watch do keep;
Two my head are guarding,
Two my feet are guiding;
Two are on my right hand,
Two are on my left hand,
Two who warmly cover
Two who o'er me hover,
Two to whom 'tis given
To guide my steps to heaven.

[Verse 2:]
Sleeping softly, then it seems
Heaven enters in my dreams;
Angels hover round me,
Whisp'ring they have found me;
Two are sweetly singing,
Two are garlands bringing,
Strewing me with roses
As my soul reposes.
God will not forsake me
When dawn at last will wake me.

Not in the least bit authoritative. It is a song, not doctrine that comes from revelation.

How do you know it isn't a revelation from God?

Has public revelation ceased? Is the person who wrote the song a priest or an authority figure? Is there any precedence for this anywhere else?

He may have been a proto-Pentecostal prophet :)

People talk about guardian angels, and angels are mentioned in the holy scriptures so I wonder do we really have guardian angels and if so how many?

One song suggests that we have fourteen.
I have no clue. It's rare to see them--I've never seen one that I knew was an angel initially. I may very well have met an angel who looked like an ordinary human being. My wife thinks she may have met one too, largely because of how strange and religious they seem to act.

But I don't think God wants us to place a premium on angelic experiences or we would all have them. Why certain people get those experiences I don't know? Certainly it would be interesting to have them, but we do have access to the Lord of glory, and you don't get any higher or manificent than that! :)

My brother saw a large angel who he knew was an angel in front of his church. Not sure why he saw it?

But how would you know that sighting an angel was indication it was a "guardian angel?" I think there is a Scripture identifying an angel as belonging to someone, so there's that.

"He may have been a proto-Pentecostal prophet :"

Really!

I get so sick of this type of attitude.
Englebert Humperdinck could have been a proto-Pentecostal prophet. Why not?

In fact, the actual term "guardian angel" isn't found in the bible as far as I know. The nearest is this:

“11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. 12 In [their] hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.” (Ps 91:11-12 NKJV)

The idea that certain angels are appointed to guard a particular person seems unknown to the bible too.

Angels unawares, is in the bible. This is the seeming "person" like you or I, may seem a bit out of place in attire, showed up out of nowhere, and left the same way. Might have had a message or other duty, that seemed needed at the time. But the scripture says, to treat everyone well, as you may be entertaining angels unawares.. I believe I've met a few in my lifetime. I don't believe it's a guardian angel, so much as one sent on demand or need..

Scripture is the authoritative words from God, guardian angels are not covered at all. Angels sent as the need arises, is covered. There are even accounts of angels sent but delayed for an amount of time because of fighting off demons on the way.

Hansel and Gretel? You are basing your Biblical beliefs on Hansel and Gretel?

Sorry, faith is based on the Word of God - not fairy tales. This is the Theology forum - not the night time baby tales.
