  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No.
Leave and go to a Church and if martyred for the Lord, in the courage of grace you get the wreath of the martyrs.
I think it’s unwise for posters on the internet to advise others in this situation to do this.

Well, I am not advising but hoping they have courage.
If the Lord calls, He will lead them the way.
Absolute faith and fearlessness.

Seems to be pride that is causing this horrific type of assault on ones own family member.

Pride is a major factor in the honor killings associated with Islam and also the Yazidi religion.

It's not pride, but shame, that motivates these kinds of acts. Honor killings and atttacks have to do with dynamics of shame. By converting to Christianity, the daughter would shame a Muslim father in the eyes of his community.

Shame is simply the loss of pride. One cannot be shamed if one is already humble. This is why in Catholicism and Orthodoxy pride is regarded as such a dangerous sin. And until recently this was very much the case in Protestantism, and still is the case among confessional Protestants.

Pride has more to do with self-esteem or consciousness of ones own dignity. Shame has to do with fear of how other people will perceive you.

How common is this?

Quite common in the Muslim world, less common among Yazidis but I am aware of at least one case in Germany where a Yazidi woman was murdered for marrying outside of her religion, which is a taboo - Yazidis are endogamous.

Since we’re in OBOB I am going to ask my most pious Roman Catholic friends @chevyontheriver and @Michie to explain the hamartiology of pride from a Roman Catholic perspective, since they are much more skilled than I am in the nuances of Roman Catholic and Scholastic theology and are well acquainted with the Catechism of the Catholic Church, etc.

Well, the way I understand it there is a healthy pride and dysfunctional pride.

Healthy pride is justified and not excessive, there is nothing wrong with being proud of oneself or of others.

Gratitude is encouraged more as it is more spiritually edifying to cultivate a sense of gratitude rather than pride.

Gratitude fosters a sense of humility because it focuses on others such as God and neighbor rather than on self.

St. Gregory the Great called unhealthy and destructive/rebellious pride the “Queen of Sins.” It opens the heart to capital sins.

Some might find this an interesting read:

I’d hardly call what the father did to the daughter as any sort of healthy pride or shame. It’s control and abuse.

You shall know them by their fruits.

Pride is, in traditional Catholic teaching, one of the seven deadly sins. Humility, the opposed virtue, is the practice of rightly assessing your dignity and worth and acting upon that value, not valuing yourself too highly or too lowly. These Muslims felt shame at the woman becoming Christian and had to wound her to protect their honor. That is pride. It is a serious corruption of how they should have perceived themselves and the dignity of this woman. Other sins they might well have been involved with in this assault include wrath, for which the corresponding virtue is patience.

Yes, this seems correct and is also largely equivalent to Orthodox doctrine, which counts pride and wrath among the destructive passions.
