This is EXACTLY what a disagreement is, Biden takes the position of XYZ and Gates thinks ABC is the way forward, he was Secretary of Defense, not State.
Relying on Gates’ opinion isn’t the strong case you think it to be.

This may come as a shock to you, but high-level people in national security/international relations have actual disagreements with each other. Also, Robert Gates was a Republican his whole career and was held over by the Obama administration for 2.5 years from the Bush administration. I don't know if Mr. Gates is "MAGA" or not, or even if he has remained in the GOP, but he was up to his retirement.
