Okay, I know Catholics can believe in the theory of evolution but some (many?) scientists take that back as far as us starting out as pond scum or something. Can Catholics believe that? If not, how far back is permissible?
I use the term "pond scum" as a joke. The scientific term is algae. It is a problem in ponds that do not have a fresh water supply. Just as we need a fresh supply of water in a physical and spiritual sense.

We start with Genesis chapter one where we are told God made them male and female. Then we look at chapter two were we are told that Eve came from the side of Adam. According to science sexual reproduction began with the algae. They were a-sexual but they also recombined. The description in the Bible where God took the female from the side of the male pretty much exactly describes how this all began. How much detail do you want because it would take a lot to explain how we went from algae to primate to mammals to humans.

  • In Volvox carteri, the transition from a simpler system to distinct male and female sexes involved genetic changes.
Of course the real question is why did God make male and female. Theology says this is a type of Jesus and His Bride the church. Then science answers the brass tack nut and bolt question of HOW God did what HE did. So the male is a type of Christ and he is to sacrifice himself for the female the way Jesus sacrificed Himself when He went to Calvary for us.

But Catholics, too, though, right?
The Catholic Church teaches that science and faith are complementary. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that there can never be a real discrepancy between faith and reason. Methodical research in all branches of knowledge, conducted scientifically and in accordance with moral laws, does not conflict with faith. In fact, Catholic scientists—both religious and lay—have led discoveries in various fields1.

Moreover, Catholics generally accept that science is compatible with the idea that God created the Universe. Pope Francis and the Church continue to look toward science as a positive force2. So, while faith and reason may differ in their approaches, they need not be at odds. Instead, they can enrich our understanding of the world and its Creator.
