  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I know next to nothing about Portland in Oregon, but it's in the news here in Australia with its drug problem.

But they don't seem to have the same visible problem with drug addicts that Portland does.

It's a bit of a myth that drugs are legal in the Netherlands. Soft drugs are tolerated for personal use, as are limited cultivation and supply. As far as criminal activity goes, the authorities are more interested in hard drugs and the big players, not the individual users. The emphasis for individuals seems to be more about treatment than punishment, and the Dutch are quite innovative about rehab.

That could be a factor in the difference with Portland. My knowledge of Portland is limited (what I've seen doesn't look great), I could only really speculate as to exact reasons.

Amsterdam doesn't have an open drug policy. What Oregon tried was more in line with Portugal. However, they chose to take a public health approach to drug addiction without first significantly beefing up the public health system.

Amsterdam and the US is like comparing apples and oranges. With such a complicated social problem, I think it's premature to draw hasty conclusions about decriminalization. The US has deep-seated structural problems in the economy. Homelessness rising may be fueling drug abuse, especially with cheap drugs like fentanyl. And in turn, homelessness is rising due to government policies that consistently favor rent-seeking over an equitable distribution of productivity and wealth.
